Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 70

Hi guys,

Cool forum

Does anyone know how to control the LEDs (under the Bluetooth, Mail, Shuffle, WLAN, Power-Buttons)? I want to use the shuffle-button as mute-button and the LED should light when system is in mute mode.
I uninstalled the Acer Launchmanager and installed a script-bundle which now polls the buttons and displays an attractive OSD (and it has winamp support) but it can't handle the LEDs (Mail, Shuffle) .
Thanks in advance.

Hi dear friends

My name is apostolos,im from greece and i found your great forum while searching the net for some infos about my acer aspire 1702smi..I bought it before a week ,second hand..

I tried to read this forum(about acer 17xx) and after 2 days and 20 pages i decide to ask...

1)can i replace the fan because the default is very noisy and if yes where i can find it?Do you know the dimensions or how to search it?
2)could pls provide a link to download the latest bios update? Is there any problem if use the one i found (in page 17 i thing in this thread)for 1710-12 series?

3)I have the invidia 128mb 5600 with 44.41 driver..Is there any newer?Can i use the drivers from 5700 ?
I really apreciate your help...

I apology for the spelling errors

Geia sou Apostole!!! Xairetismata apo Cyprus!!!

Katse na to giriso se Agglika na katalavainoun kai oi alloi.

About your questions:

1) Your laptop has three fans. One for your graphic card and two (one 50mm fan and a 35mm radiator) for the CPU.
The noisy fan is the 35mm radiator, and it is noisy at high speeds.
Unfortunately, the radiator's design is unique (it is made from AVC Inc which specializes in thermal solutions). The fan's code is BN03510B05M0053.
You will not find a similar radiator to fit in the laptop. It's impossible.
2)I wouldn't try the 1710 Bios. Try Acer website for the latest bios for your laptop. But I don't think that it is crucial to update the Bios.
3)I think that you can use the drivers for 5700, if 5600 is included in the file, which I assume it is. If it's not, the setup will tell you that it cannot install the drivers because you don't have the right hardware.

How much did you buy the 1702??

Kalimera panther5 se euxaristo gia tin apantisi

I tried to upgrade the bios with the latest version for the 1710 model (Bios 3C14,i had the 3C13) but no luck..
In acer's site there is no newer version for my 1705(and not 1702 as i wrote in my previous post ).So bios cannot help me...As you wrote there is no silent fan so i think i should get used to it..The problem is that the fans never stop. When the fan operates in the first lvl its ok..But when operates in the second or third lvl...i just cant stand it..Its really a great machine though and if you look just once in this great monitor you just cant use anything else

An exeis thn kalosynh sou einai eukolo na doseis kapoio link gia tous drivers tis 5700 gia na tous katevaso kai na tous dokimaso??

I bought it second hand befor a week in mint condition for 850 euros..purchase date 11/04

Reading through these 93 pages takes some time, but I finally got rid of that anoying spin down problem. Also ordered the bluetooth "upgrade"

I also wanted to ask if I can upgrade my wifi card to support the usrobotics 100 or even 125Mb/s turbo mode?

I've got an Aspire 1711, which I'm planning to upgrade the graphics card on, from the hideous on-board Intel stuff to the GeForce card.

I *think* all I need to do is to remove the Intel 865G Bridge Board, and replace it with a GeForce FX card.

What I need to know, before I call Acer's spares service, is what part numbers I need - does anyone on here know what I need to quote to them?

I'm looking at getting the 128MB card, so need the part number for that; also need the part number for any screws I'd need to fit it.

Unfortunatly, the service manual link posted elsewhere in this thread (the one for chapter 6), doesn't quote the part numbers, just says 'TBD', also doesn't give any indication of which screws (if any) I'd need to buy in addition.

Many thanks,

j

Are you people facing fan noice troubles??
How you deal with it?
Is there a insulant to bound the noice not over heat the cpu?
I actually welcome the fan noise. The fan on the video card died out some time ago (GPU temp was over 100C)and I had to send it to Acer (thought i got another huge problem and then had to send it back ). Only thing I can recommend is to keep it cool and give it good ventilation and to not use very straining programs (games, 3D rendering applications and such).

1711 screen dimmed (started with a flickering)

Hi,

I have a 1710 (just looked at the case to confirm it - thought it was a 1711). A couple of days ago the screen started to flicker when I turned it on. It never seems to get to the correct brightness anymore. It looks like its in 'battery' mode but I have it on the mains. The only s/w thing I did recently was to install the Intel 865 software update. Could that be the problem? (hopes). Otherwise I guess the illuminator/tube/whatever is on its way out.

As an aside, the 1710 is GREAT! I bought it in the UK 18 months ago. Since that time I moved to Bangladesh (100% humidity and up to 40 degrees C). I've lugged it all over the country and it just keeps on going. (Except for the above!).

Will be getting a graphics upgrade - since I read its possible here. I heard that the 1710 has basically desktop parts. So is the graphics card a normal AGP on its side?

Your laptap could be a 1711, the 1710 is the base for more models (1711, 1712, 1714). Your problem is not software related, but hardware. Most likely your invertorboard or a part of the backlighting has died. If you read further back in this topic you'll find more victims with the same problem.

Acer 1710/1711 (not sure which!) Graphics upgrade

Thanks for the response on my screen flicker problem. The flicker has gone now. The screen is still dim at some times but gets brighter with use. I suppose a component is on its way out. I'll contact Acer and see if it can be serviced in Bangladesh (probably not!).

Can I upgrade the graphics in the 1710/1711? Is this a matter of buying a desktop graphic AGP card or a mobile graphics processor? If I can't get a go5700 (which is mentioned in this forum) then what earlier graphics options are worth considering? (Everything comes very late into the Bangladeshi market).

I have only 512MB memory at the moment. Do people see a big boost with an extra 512MB? With an extra 1GB?

Regards,

Neil

Acer 1710/1711 with P3.4, 512MB, 80GB. And loving it!

The Acer 1710 series field service manual gives go5600, go5700/64 MB and go5700/128 as alternatives.

Aspire 1711

Thanks for the help. The Geforce 5700, 5600 are not in Bangladesh I'm afraid. So I'll have to wait till I go abroad. There is a 5750 PCI express card but I think PCI express does not help me. I'm also assuming that I need a chip rather than a regular card.

Now reading back through messages to get more info on the go5700 and to see where i can get the field service manual.
