Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 8

Is the Bois update releated to the fans being on all the time too?

Maybe the fans need to be on, have you tested the temperature of the processor? Maybe because they are desktop components their hot all the time, hence the fan is on.

Why would you not want the harddrive to stay on all the time, don't desktops/notebooks regulate their hardrive spin downs?

Sorry,

I have discovered late that the cpu used in 1712 and 1714 is a Prescott, and I have readed that it is very very hot compared to Northwood.

I am thinking to buy the 3.4 Ghz and it is described like a cpu that in a full opened case of a desktop reach the 78 degrees Celsius in maximum load.

What the hell can happen using it inside the very little space of the Acer ??
And the fans will be 100 % maximum speed all the time the note is on ???

Can you tell me your cpu temp under idle and at 100 % of usage ?

Thanks !!!

48C for me idle. 55C after a 6-8 hrs of gaming. The one thing this beast doesn't have is heating issues.

3.06 is not hyperthreading.
The 3.06 is used in the 1700 and the 3.0 is used in the 1710

Looks like the 3.06 comes in versions with and without hyperthreading

Same technology, I dunno if they're the exact same card to the point you could swap them though. I haven't seen the Alienware one. If anyone has you can compare the pics to the ones I took of the Acer removable card. I doubt they would be the same since laptops are pretty proprietary.

My NEW 1712 arrived

I got my NEW 1712 today. The one I'm returning has a dead pixel and our good friends at PCTorque exchanged it for me (thanks to Laura for handling this for me )

No dead pixels on this one so it looks like a keeper. I clocked the video card to 400/580 and ran a few benchmarks.

Aquamark -- 24,043
3Dmark 2001 -- 12,003

This one seems to run a bit hotter. From 55 to 65 celsius. I'm pretty sure it's the overclocking.

I'm in the process of installing what seems like 5000 applications at the moment. Man I really love this machine. Can't wait till they get this hard drive / BIOS issue worked out.

Played C&C G Zero Hour this weekend, glitchey at 1280x1024 ( fast seemes to be a driver issue) but the game is all but unplayable with the pausing. I must say that I have never seen the pausing do apparant as with this particular piece of software.

ransaak, You may have been right about why the drive is powering down, or rather why Acer set it to auto power down. I kept the drive alive while playing and downloading and after about an hour the drive was about 60C, it was hotter then the GPU. How Hot can a HD safely get ?

I was downloading and running a game which was accessing it so that would most likely be worst case (in a cool room).

It wasn't pausing while you were downloading I'm assuming? I thought about trying that myself. 60C is nothng to worry about at all. You still have about 20 more degrees celsius before you have to worry.
Nope no pausing at all while downloading. Works like a champ. Only think is you have to get something to download. I Go here :

Nice 211 meg files, keep the dl going. Kinda sucks when you are using a wireless phone to do wh DL'ing ( I am going to get one hell of a bill this month ) but at least I can enjoy a game on the road...
