Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 75

Well. just an update to keep the best thread on this forum alive...

I did not sell my Acer... I was still using for a project one day when the inverter board blew out... I had to have it fixed ASAP. The repair place said 4 to 8 weeks. So I bought another on Ebay with a buy it now and paid thru the nose.

Now I have this one back, plus the old one I fixed last year, plus the ebay.

3 of these.

Problem is... one is nearly MAXED... the other two are base units and I am going to max them... I still cant believe HOW upgradable this design is... nothin else out there like it.

2GB RAM
3.4 CPU
750 GB HD

I need ONE of the high end graphics cards... as the fixer unit has just the old intel card.

I need all three for the bluetooth units.

And I need 2 of the 4x DVD Burners...

Unless anyone knows if there is a newer yet 8x DVD RW that works...

I wanna max all three out.

I have tested this as best I can and I believe these will fully support all elements of VISTA....

Does anyone have any comments on that ?

Hi and Merry Christmas
I tried to upgrade my Win Xp to Vista and in the Middle of the process and during the first restart a blue screen appeared advising me that something is wrong with my bios version (I’m using 3.13) and I should upgrade! Any suggestions? Should I format the c: partition first and then try again? Or I just cant use Vista in my PC (Acer 1705smi 3.06HT)

A last question.
I notice that my monitor in white background flickering. What kind of problem is that?
Thanks a lot for your help in advance

I have a question. I love my 17" full screen and don't want to give it up. Is there any way to replace the MB and video card with something more current? Plenty of room in there I think...

I have a display problem with Acer aspire 1711. The display had the usual problems of flickering, going dark, and comming back. Now its totally dim. I'd assume it was the inverter problem.

BUT

When I connect an external monitor I get something like the same behavior. When I leave the laptop off for a long time the screen comes on for a time, but then shortly (10 seconds) later goes black.

Can someone please tell me if this is the inverter problem?
Yes, that IS the inverter. There is a great shop in Ohio you can mail it to and be fixed for a hundred or so. I have done it. They all fade after a time anyway, and now this one is nearly as bright as my imac.... nearly.

= )

Acer should really update this design.... core 2 duo, with a 1TB hard drive and 4GB of Ram... with a true 1600x1200 resolution in this same 1710 form factor. Who would buy that ?
I would. I mentioned a page or so ago that I'd love to update me internals but keep my Full 17 inch screen. I wonder if the MB could be replaced with something newer. I have no idea how to even attempt something like that.

hi all,
is there already an Acer Aspire 1714smi (or 17__) running with Vista without problems?
I read some of the postings in the threads. To upgrade my Acer i bought a new harddrive (400GB Seagate Barracuda), 2x1GB DDR-RAM and Windows Vista Ultimate.

So what else? What about drivers? Any experiences and recommandations.
Thx

My DVD seems to be off. It can only read CDs. But the problem is not that. I tried to change it with other CD/DVD drives BUT windows are unable to boot! When I insert the default one no problem at all. Could anyone please help me with that? What might be the problem and its unable to recognize other drives except Mutsutsita or something like that?
And a last question. My monitor has also started flickering. Can anyone inform me where I can get one from? E-shop would be great since I live in Europe and I just cant find it. My laptop is the SMI 1705
Thanks!

Dark times has come for my Aspire 1711SMi. After 2 happy years of computing, my videocard seems to be broken.
At first, i got bad misformed picture. Later the display went black and windows reported some errors about the nv4-disp.dll. I thought at first that it was a driver problem. But then I got verical en horizontal lines when starting the computer (even in BIOS).
And now the only thing what I get is a blinking cursor when I start the computer, nothing else.

I heard people who used the internal videosupport in place of the NVidia Card. I tried this by removing the card and I added a external monitor. But I get nothing, not even a blinking cursor. Does this indicate that my MotherBoard is broken or do does anyone know anythink else to try?

I hope to fix this problem, it would be a shame to throw this fine notebook away.

Thanks for the help!

My Acer Aspire 1712 SMi randomly mysteriously dies with a random vertical display.
I have made no modifications to it.
I assume it is one horizontal scan line being repeated.
It responds to no keys except power off.

Anybody have a clue as to what the source of the problem might be?

Or since it is 3 1/2 years old, should I just shop for a replacement?
My Acer is 4 years old this month!

It is still the best machine I have for many tasks.

No other portable has 2GB RAM, 750GB HD and a true 17" non wide screen.

If only Acer would update the MB...
Wow, seems this thread is close to dead. Just an update. TWO of my acers BOTH this week for no reason lost their DVD drives. Bios No longer sees the drives, they cannot boot to restore disks. I had this happen once before when the controller on the MoBo burned out. Had to replace the whole MoBo $450. Ouch. Every one of these 1712s I have owned has LOST its DVD drive on the second controller with a bad MoBo. Seems like it is only a question of WHEN not if. Oh well, not too bad for 4 years old.
