A quick thought came to my mind about the downloading solution. You can do a simple thing to make it internet independent. I have done it before, so technically it is possible. Make yourself some secure FTPD in your windows environment. If you have a NAT'ed address you are even better off with that ... now allow it to be accessed from only a certain IP address ... make it your IP address. Now just put some big file, some ISO image would be perfect on your new FTPD and fire it up. Start any FTP client capable of download speed control, connect to your own IP's FTP server, and start the download of that big file limiting the transfer rate to lets say 2kb/s
that will grant you more then 24h of downloading
thus keeping your harddrive spinning and busy, while taking probably less then a percent of your system's resources
