Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 9

A quick thought came to my mind about the downloading solution. You can do a simple thing to make it internet independent. I have done it before, so technically it is possible. Make yourself some secure FTPD in your windows environment. If you have a NAT'ed address you are even better off with that ... now allow it to be accessed from only a certain IP address ... make it your IP address. Now just put some big file, some ISO image would be perfect on your new FTPD and fire it up. Start any FTP client capable of download speed control, connect to your own IP's FTP server, and start the download of that big file limiting the transfer rate to lets say 2kb/s that will grant you more then 24h of downloading thus keeping your harddrive spinning and busy, while taking probably less then a percent of your system's resources
Hope it works for you, check it out and let me know how it worked

Keep us posted if you Acer owners hear of a Bios update for the harddrive spin down issue.

I have never heard of that issue before, is it common? If not why is it occuring?

Last I've heard...

Just received this today...

Thank you for contacting Acer America. Our engineers have been notified of
the hard drive issue and it has been forwarded to Taiwan. If a fix will
be implemented it would most likely be in the form of a BIOS update and
would be posted on our support site at www.acersupport.com. Currently we
have no ETA nor do we have a list where we contact user's to download
if/when a BIOS is released. I apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause.

Respectfully,

It's the "if" part of that statement that scares me.

Thats why I give them until next friday to release a fix before this goes back, then I wait an additional two weeks before I make a another purchase ( Most likely the HP )

For the 171x owners ....

I read in an italian forum that the bios have another problem, it do not permit the boot from an USB drive or other USB device.

Is it true ???

So if I want do a bootable floppy, I MUST do only a bootable CD ???
That is true...

In fact if I leave a USB dive connected at bootup the system will not boot at all it just hangs at the acer screen until I remove the device

I can only hope they fix the pausing issue first. Not that that isn't a major problem, but at least you can just plug in the USB after boot.
The USB boot issue is not such a big problem as the hard drive pausing. The USB thing can be called inconvenient, but that is again only my opinion. Having at least 4 bootable versions of win cds and a dozen of linuxes to choose from, I think that can be easily overcome (btw. some of the linux bootable memory loaded operating systems are amazing, very very cool and convenient ... and FREE ). On the other hand the drive pausing is a major problem for most people, who would like to enjoy this machine, with some regular game play and other hard drive intensive stuff. Having to resolve to some unconventional tricks to keep the drive spinning will not win this great notebook to much popularity among the community. I am still into buying this laptop mainly because of the great 4:3 screen, it's resolution which for me is perfect for this size, and the big harddrive. The strengths of this machine make it certainly worth a try, and the weaknesses, at least for me, a thing to overcome. I just wish to see the main problems resolved by an official bios fix ... and what is more important, some time soon I hope.

You can't use photoshop, word or even internet explorer without the pausing rearing it's ugly head. Definately wait until they fix it.

Have you tried doing some downloading loop, to keep it from spinning down?
You can do it without being plugged into internet. If you have time and are willing to give it a shot, let me know how it worked out.
I am really into buying this laptop, and if such tricks won't keep the spin down at bay, I will think of something else.
And the fix to it is just a must have ... I hope people at Acer realise it.

This is weird...the hard drive pausing is not consistent. Like for instance, right now I have been on my 1712 for a couple of hours and it has not paused once. Other times it pauses every 10 mins or so...And some times it pauses about every minute. I wonder if there is some process running in the background that has an affect on it. I dunno
post #173 of 1526
at least your experience is consistant with mine.. No Consistancy

I was just asked by Acer to test the new Bios... I am waiting for it now... If it works I shall distribute..

:mmm:

im really thinking about buying this thing next month but am not totally sure if i would be going over board or not, im not a gamer but here's what i'd be doing with it
programming
web/graphic design
i'd be using programs such as dreamweaver, illustrator, flash, photoshop, everynow and then maybe some video editing but thats not a biggie, i do work with big photo files from my camera and would have a lot of big files open
so do you think this is too much power or exactly what i need?
Great news ... if it works ...
