Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 2

The unit weighed 14.8LBS NOT counting the AC power adapter and though I haven't looked very hard yet I haven't found a case that hold it.

It doesn't ship with any case? Is that normal?

The dead pixel policy only applies to the Acer. Sager has the 30 day money back no questions asked which Acer does not have. We've tried to get a no dead pixel policy with Sager, but the price hike would probably push most people away from being able to buy.

As far as which is best for gaming, I personally still choose the Sager 8790 mainly because of this higher FPS. The exhaust vent, AC power plug, and Audio jacks are on the right hand side of the Acer can bother right hand external mouse gamers but I wouldn't consider that point break. Both LCDs are great, but the Acer has more of a noticable uneven brightness (in streaks) which you can kind of see in the attached pic. All LCDs have this to some degree.

No, it does not come with a case standard and I would consider that pretty common. Many of the big names out there don't come standard with a carrying case.

Well I just bought an Acer 1712. If they give out commision on online orders Adam, you definately deserve this one.

I'm going to use it mainly for 3d graphics, video editing and a few games. This was the machine I was waiting for so I finally decided to throw my cash down. I'll post a review as well when I receive it.

They may have a NO DEAD PIXEL policy, but hell if I want to have to send it back.

Hard drive connections

Hey Adam, since acer failed to mention the 10/100/1000 lan and the removable video I was wondering if the 1712 also had serial ata connectors because the chipset supports it.

Thanks

Adam- do you know anything about the 1714

Sorry, no info on the 1714. I did look at the clocking though and default it's 350/580. I clocked it up to 400/650 and it ran:

3dmark01SE 12,955
3dmark03 3,463
Aquamark3 25,604
UT2K3 1024X768 155FPS
UT2K3 1600X1200 99FPS

I wouldn't push it much more than that.

I don't see any chance for SATA, but put in the request

What about upgrade, open purchesing stuff like a GPU for the unit?
Hi Adam,

in extremetech review is written that the "desktop version" standard clock for go5700 is 450/600.

Can you test it and increase only the core clock to see how it is compared to 9700 benchs ? And do you think that the cooler is able to manage well the heat or all goes to fire ???

A VERY IMPORTANT THING TO TEST AND TO KNOW !!!!!! :

In no where in the world is written if the 1712 motherboard/bios is actually error free to use the max HD of ATA100.

For me, I want add the Western Digital 250GB to this Acer, but I do not want know too late that the bios of the motherboard see only max 135 GB like some older bios version do.

So PLEASE Adam, can you see in some ways if the bios is able to see ALL the 250GB of an ATA100 HD ??
If you have one in your shop, can you put it inside for some seconds to see if the pc recognize all the free space or no over 135GB limit or can you ask it to your Acer's friends ??

This thing can give many problems to people like me that want upgrade the standard components of 1712, and you now are the ONLY person that can resolve this very big doubt for all of us.

THANKS 250Giga TIMES !!!

Adam,

I'm really looking hard at the Acer 1712. Is there any way to get PC3200 memory instead of the 2700? Seems like a bottle neck to me.

Mine should be coming today

It uses desktop ram so it would probably be pretty cheap to upgrade.

I tried to grab a 250GB drive to try it out, but the 250s just sold out @ The Computer Room so we're waiting for more to come in and another chance to get to it. I doubt the RAM is much of a bottle neck, dual channel 333 doesn't run that far behind dual channel 400. I wish I had time to throw in various processors and other hardware specs to compare their benefit/price and see what is worth it, but I just don't right now.

Send it to me Seriously...I'll test the crap outta the thing

My 1712 has arrived

I've been playing with it for about 2 hrs. It's pretty damn nice. I have one stuck pixel (green) about 2 inches from the right side and right at eye level. I haven't decided wether it bothers me enough to send it back or not.

It is very big but I rather like that. Very solid. Well built.
Screen is gorgeuos except for my green little friend.
It played Jedi Academy at full detail with no hiccups at all. And the graphics looked better than on my desktop with the Geforce 4 TI4200.

No heat issues and not as loud as my desktop.

I'll post more after I've played with it a bit more.

my only reservation

Dang this is a fine machine for the price. I would get it in a second, if it only had something better than s-video out. Like DVI or even component (the latest Toshiba MCE laptop has the same GPU, and it supports HD component out.)

VGA to Component Cable

Hey squeezebox, if your only problem is component out, you can get VGA to component cables, here's one I found for $20

first product on the page

here's another site, not as cheap though

ARGH!!!! And I was just about to order the 8790!!! Sheeeit... now I have more to think about!
I'm not sure if this is it but I think this is how to change between "performance" and "desktop repacement" settings.

I hope you can see the picture alright. I am illiterate when it comes to photo editing.

No, that deals with image enhancments, not clock settings. Maybe temp settings, or if you see some thing on battery life? Thanks for looking. If you find anything else please post it thanks.
Ok...I downloaded Riva Tuner and this is what I got from the Diagnostic report. It says the core clock is 351MHz. So my question is, is it safe to manipulate these settings? Supposidly the Go5700 supports a core clock of 450. Hmmm maybe this topic deserves a new thread...what do you think?

For EightCounts

Hi,

please, can you see in your 1712's bios if is possible to use a 250GB hd in it ??
To do that, can you see in your bios (and if you can tell me name and version namber to looking for info on it by myself) if is possible a value greater that 150 GB for the hd intalled ??
The place is where is usually written "autodetect", see if some values are pre-selected and if is present a maximum value admitted.
Is a lot of time that I am seeking this information, please help me (and us) to know the answer.

Thanks a lot.
