I love my 1712. I've replaced the 2700 ram with 3200 and when I get some more time, I'm going to replace the 120 HD with a 200 HD with 8 meg cache.

I've updated the drivers and clocked the GPU up a little higher. I can't get it to run as high as Adam did but I can move it from 350 to 380 (tried 397 and it locked up) without any problems and also up the memory to 500+ (I forget the speed).

Also, the drivers are on Disk 1 of the recovery CD. Good to know for those of you upgrading to XP pro.

So far, this laptop is just perfect. My CRT monitors pale in comparison to the LCD. I am very pleased with it.

Needs answers to the following please:

What is the temperature of your processor ( and notebook) at idle and playing game?

How noisy is it?

How big is it, can I carry it to work every day?

With a 17" screen you would expect uxga, do you think its better than 17" wsxga(1680x1050)?

Please answer. If you don't know how to do the temperature thing we can tell you.

questions

I wonder if pc torque will start offering to paint the 1712???? there is no option for that yet but with all the money you save on this laptop I could now afford to get it painted. Has anybody tried soldner http://soldner.jowood.com/ on this laptop?? I am thinking of picking this laptop up in a couple of weeks when my summer job kicks in.

I am still hoping that Adam will be able to come though and be able to get Acer to sell us custem units. Or maybe the US answer to the 1714 will have ddr 400 ram and an ATI 9700

Kimbrcd, this thing according to Acer's site measures 12.6" high x 14.9" wide x 2.2" deep and weighs approx 16 lbs with power brick.

Anyone found a sleeve that will fit? Or a backpack style carry case?

noise

Regarding the noise:

I had the 1711 first - this was very silent because the fan does not kick in so often. But the graphic performance was too bad. So I got th 1712. The noise disapointed me a bit. So I got a ZD7020. This was almost the same noise but the 1712 has the better screen (in my opinion - I do not like resolutions where you need a special glas (in German Fernglas) to see something).

Staying on topic: it is noisy as you can expect for a P4 3 Ghz with a graphic card (which makes much of the noise). But it is not worse than other machines with this specs.

extended warranty in Europe

Just for the European folks here: you can buy Acer Advantage package which covers a 3 year warranty including damage ($100 if the screen is broken). This cost around $150 to $200 (depends where you buy it).

The great thing abouth this warranty is, that it even holds for damage when you drop this beast etc. (of course it does not cover damage where this beast drops on

You can buy this 30 days after purchase.

US customers can also buy optional support packages which include 3 year warranty extensions, 3 year onsite upgrades, and 3 year Total Protection (covers accidental damages). Of course, you can mix and match the above or simply buy them all which costs around $500.

So if the benchmarks for the Acer are the same or a little lower than say the "sager 8790" , what advantage is there having desktop componnents in a notebook?

I would expected desktop components to outpeform mobile components.
This is dissapointing to me as a prospective Acer 17## buyer.

The point of desktop parts is mainly that it saves money. Just compare the price difference between the 1712 and a sager with the same specs. Also your max harddrive size is bigger in the 1712. When comparing mobile parts to desktop parts, the only difference in performance is really in the hard drive and video card. Since the sagers make up for this with expensive raided harddrives, they are going to be just as fast with the same specs and faster with a faster processor. Both use mobile graphics cards, so both laptops are limited that way. So, if price does not matter, get the top of the line sager.

Hope that helps.

I want a desktop video card in a notebook, thats what I want.

Give me what I want, waaaaaaaaaa

PCI express may bring that.

The desktop hard disk and the huge 17" desktop LCD (not widescreen) are the main sellers of the Acer Aspire 1710. There is no better LCD on the market in regards to contrast and brightness in my opinion than the display in the Acer Aspire 17x0 series. It easily surpasses the 16" UXGA display that was in my previous Sager NP8890. Also, the Acer build quality is top-notch.

Also, it is a plus to know that the video card is easily removable from the bottom panel (like the Alienware Area-51m) if Acer offers a video card upgrade or a new one comes out in a future refresh of this model, in which case it could be purchased as a spare part most likely.

Almost every high-end notebook has unique features, and you will not find any other notebook currently on the market that will allow desktop hard disk, desktop memory, and a standard size 17" display. Of course, it does not mean that this notebook is for everyone with its overall size and weight.

When installing a new HD, keep in mind you can adjust the screws on the side so that you can move the power connector slightly to fit around the plastic casing near the HD. I was panicing when I tried to put my WD 200 gig HD in there last night because I screwed the HD in to the frame and then tried to connect the power. It didn't fit. I thought I was SOL then I tried putting the original HD back in and I had the same problem. You just have to tighen one side and loosen the other to move the HD a little to the right or left as needed.

Just an FYI.

Can some of you post some 3dmark03 benches for the 1714?

What about carrying that animal ???
It seems like you cannot open it like a normal notebook, like for example in a plane or in the BUS... It´s really huge... that´s my main problem to buy it...
Carrying it can get a little heavy. I'd suggest getting a backpack type case so you can distribute the weight.

I'd imagine opening this on the plane or bus would be difficult because of the height of it. If the person in front of you reclines their seat, it would be hard to open the notebook to use.

If you plan on using this on a plane, try to get seated on one of the emergency exit seats or at the head of a section of seats near a dividing wall. They have more room between chairs to accomodate emergency exiting or no one in front of you to recline their seats. On a bus, the back row in the middle on the aisle would probably be best.

Either case, battery life would also be a concern. 1 to 1.5 hours. You'd need an external powersource or more batterries.

Also, swapping out batteries requires a screwdriver. I personally think that's a bad design but that's just me.

photos of your screens please

I ran 3DMark03 and got a score of 3006.

This is with only 512 meg stock memory installed.
Using 56.72 video driver with the modified INF file.

Added the other stick of memory and got 3049.
