Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 17

I can tell you my heat temps with my 1714 :

The gpu nvidia in standard use, from 53 C to 65 C, in stress condition I have read the value of 95 C, but I do not know if was the higher inside the test ... but for sure the default danger driver limit is 130 C .... so it is OK

the cpu 3.4 Ghz Northwood under 30 min of prime95 have touched only some times the 71 C but for much was from 67-69 C.

The gpu motherboard touched 70 C or more, if I remember well ...

The big problem is my WD 250GB that after 1 hour is in a standard idle temp of 50-53 C .... and in stress condition I have touched 63 C (you must consider that the WD specifies tells max temp for usage the hd is 55 C ...).

The air that exaust from the note is really really hot in stress situation, but the problem (for me) is not the air temp but the higher fans noise.
If I can downgrade the temp of 10-15 C, the noiser fan will be off the most of the time, and all will be better usable for system temps and for ambient silence ....

The hot air pass through the keys of keyboard, in direction of face ...
In winter season this is a very happy situation, it is a hot conditioner to travel with.

I am waiting an undernote 4fans notebook cooler to test if it is able to get this 10-15 C out ... I hope .....

Just a thing, in the 1714 the drive is the Supermulti version, so you can't not only write 4x + and - DVD, but it write the DVD-RAM too.

If some one of you have found a way to cold more the hd in your 171x, please tell me. Thanks.

Problem with sound ...

Guys and gals

I have a new aspire 1711 SCI who works great BUT after 20 minutes of standard office use turns into a roaring Vacuum cleaner that almost blows me away ...

If you own one you will likely know that there are 4 steps of cooling

1. first gear very silent ... at startup
2. second gear up noticable but ok
3. third gear loud cooling and annoying
4. fourth gear (you get this at the post screen ... but then it goes away)

mine always gets stuck after 20 minutes in third gear

even when the air cools down at idle he won't go silent and keeps on blowing in third gear

what to do ? I can't change anything in the bios ... in windows also ...

are there any other people that have the same problem ??

thanks for your replies

greetings
Yves

That is strange. I understand your 4 fan level descriptions. My system rarely gets to the highest "Level 3,4" sounds unless I am playing a 3D game, but even then it cycles and does not stay at that level for too long. When returning to Windows after playing, it always cycles down rather quickly after cooling.

The Acer 17xx is a real monster I don´t think that is the right laptop for me. 7 kg are very heavy.
My problem with the Acer 8005 is that it is a very new laptop and so I wasn´t able to read some reviews before ordering.

I hope that in the next time more laptops with exchangeable graphis will be released...

I´ve read some reviews that the AMD Athlon 64 2800 is very quiet in office use.

Since you are in Germany, why don't you take a look at the TARGA Visionary on offer at Lidl on 05.06.2004. It seems to have most of the things you want: Athlon 64, 3,6 kg weight, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, very quiet in all modes. Of course it only has a 15,4 wide display, but it seems a very good compromise to me. In fact, if I had not bought my ACER 1703SM a couple of months ago, this is the notebook I would have gone for.

What a sudden change. #$&# hit the fan!

Well, I WAS happy with my 1712 until this week. First, I noticed a slight darkening of the LCD near the bottom of the screen. No big deal and I felt I could live with it. BUT here is what has started to happen in the last three days in order of occurance.

1) speakers started to make a static noise all of the sudden. I also noticed that when I moved the screen to the closed position, the speakers would start to get a static popping sound. (this has since gone away when I reloaded the system)

2) Next, my speaker would totally quit working. I would have to reboot the system for them to start working again.

3) wireless 802 card no longer works on my wireless network. Ran fine for 2 months, now, it cannot see my wireless base station. I had to hook up an external USB wireless adapter to get my wireless network back.

4) my usb mouse and usb joystick would suddenly get disconnected from the computer (you would hear the disconnect sound USB makes) then seconds later, the computer would find them again and connect them.

5) Constant crashes and lockups now. Will be playing a game or doing some surfing, and the screen will totally lock up, or, I will get a black screen and the computer will shut down.

6) Finally, tonight, somthing started happening that really has me worried and pissed. When turning the computer on, after the intial info screen that shows the computer name, amount of memroy, cashe size, etc... , the screen will go black and a small flashing underscore will apprear at the top left of the screen and the computer will not go past that screen. It takes me about 5-10 restarts to get windows to start.

7) after windows loads, the mouse will sometimes stutter like windows has a delay. Instead of a smooth mouse motion, it steps across the screen.

In addition to these problems, I am still haveing problems loading game CDs onto the system. I get EREG errors and have to copy the CDs to the hard drive and install them from there.

I have performed full virus scans, recovered my system using the factor acer disks, and even removed the battery and ran off AC power solely, checked all connections inside the notebook, but all these symptoms still appear. I hate to send it back, but I suddenly have no confidence in the system at all, which really upsets me because I liked it a lot until all this happend

With so many problems occuring at once, you may have a faulty motherboard that might need to be replaced. Of course, going through the mechanical drill process with technical support may take awhile before they diagnose the problem for you.

In any case, you obviously should not be having all of the problems you are describing.

FYI - Acer support is not that bad...

I just thought I had crashed my Acer Aspire 1712 - I plugged a wrong device into the PS2-port and suddenly the notebook switched off. After that everything was dead. The on/off switch did not work anymore. Nothing.

I called Acer support. They told me, I should unplug the system and disconnect the battery for a couple of minutes, because the system has a overvoltage protection build in.

So I did (of course unplugging the battery is a longer task on the 1712, you need to open 4 screws and to open the whole system = 8 more).

After that the system worked again

So maybe someone remember this, when he/she is doing the same mistake I did and nothing is working anymore.

Do you have anything plugged into the PCMCIA port ?

I experienced severe and random crashes for a while until I realized it was the SOny GC82 PCMCIA wireless GSM internet card. I Don't believe it is the port, just the drivers. I would first experience a sound that could only be described as what sounded like surf at the beach washing over the speakers and then soon after the system would freeze. When the card was removed this NEVER happened.

sorry for being late, however, I got sidetracked with a few issues.

First impressions: Big, beautiful, & HEAVY!

Pros:
Screen is very bright, I wish it had more levels of dimming (especially when trying to preserve night vision), when compared against older machines, older machines looked dull and dingy.
Very fast, zippy and very quick on most things.
Very large & fast hard drive.

Cons:
One stuck pixel - blue near bottom center, noticed it roughly 48 hours after powering up.
Doesn't want to work correctly with hardware accelleration in DxVA mode or using the glide2x.dll wrapper, will run fine smoothly few a few seconds and then stutter (dropping a few frames), and then resume again in HD modes high resolution modes. Without it CPU load is 30-40%, with it CPU load less than 10%.
Fan noise is tolerable, but can get quite noisy when doing CPU intensive tasks, a good amount of heat is also discharged from the right side.

Sasem's USB HDTV video image is fantastic. Recording it is also very nice for later playback. However, the software that comes with it is somewhat buggy (timed recording issues, handling of weak stations, and feature set), and I would term it early Beta and not quite ready for release.

Video streams store at roughly 8GB/Hr at HD mode, 4GB/HR at DVD quality mode. Has no apparent problem keeping up while multi-tasking using normal internet and office applications.

Speaking of the glide2x.dll wrapper, can someone find this file in their Acer and send it to me (should be a small file in the windows/system32 folder), a screen saver deleted it, and it isn't on the install disks and I tried to reinstall the video drivers in case it was there. I also tried some of the commonly available ones on the net with no success Any help would greatly be appreciated.

I will test it in a few ATSC/NTSB modes including 1080i even though the screen can only show 720p in its native resolution. Is there anything you want me to look for specifically, or any bench mark programs?

I will be creating DVD's, not tapes with this unit.

I'll trade you a green pixel for a blue one... Looks like they are in the same location.....

NO DEAD OR STUCK PIXEL GUARANTEE

NOT TRUE!!!!

ACER Support has denied this warentee to me & will not even service it under warrentee as a single pixel does not qualify as defective or need servicing!!!!
How about that!
I'm PISSED!

I have one mis-conforming pixel right in the middle of the screen......

I bought it yesterday......
A$$holes!!!
Before you get upset, you should get your facts straight. It is PCTorque who offers the no dead/stuck pixel guarantee in accordance with Acer. This does not mean it is an official Acer policy or that all resellers will comply with this policy.

That is why when I decided to purchase, I was going to order from CDW or TheNerds.net because they both accept returns on opened Acer notebooks. In my opinion, if the notebook can be returned within the first 30 days for any reason, then that is essentially the same thing as a no dead pixel guarantee.

However, when buying Acer notebooks, you have to make sure you read the detailed return policy for each reseller because most will not allow returns on opened notebooks.

Anyone know if there is an Air/Car adapter for our little beast? Gonna have to fly to Singapore soon and I'll want to play some games while in flight. It's a LONG flight from what I hear.

Power

And if anyone knows a source for power packs for the 1714Smi which are smaller / lighter than the standard ACER pack could they please post details.

Unfortunately the standard Targus power packs won't deliver 180W.

Thanks

I was more concerned that our power connector is 4 pronged instead of the standard 1 prong that I always seem to see.
