It'd be interesting if we could contact Jackson Yen and get an unrestricted Bios release. Doubt it would ever happen but it's a nice daydream.

Almost 15lbs, wow! With the AC adapter probably looking at 18lbs or so. Jupiter's got moons that weigh less than that.

Exactly what I'm looking for though. Why should I pay for a some mobility when I want none?

Has anyone found out what the changes made by 3A20 are; I am loathe to install until I know what it will do (and what it wont)

Thanks

Hi there! Here's my small contribution:

Latest Aspire 1710 BIOS link---->
http://stkts.sertek.com.tw/notebook....apse=55.2#55.2

[Everything can be translated by using an on-line translator (like Altavista) with Chinese (Traditional sort).]

The unique difference from previous BIOS releases is the following:

"1. Update O2 AudioDJ BIN file to latest version."

So, I suppose the latest release is good news for people who used to have problems with AUDIODJ.

My DVD died on me yesterday now I have to find a way to just ship the DVD instead of the whole system becuase the system works just fine. The sad thing is I never even got a chance to use the burner on it. I guess playing all those movies and games on the system really made the DVD work to hard. Maybe the DVD is not the greatest out there I don't know. Anyone else have this problem at all? If so please tell me if you had to send the whole system or if you could just send the DVD back to them and they send you a new one. Also where is everyone able to order the internal parts from (ie. the DVD, graphics card etc...) I can't find anywhere on the acer site to order internal parts should something go wrong. this would help me in case something else should go wrong.

Here's my current config:
Acer 1712 SMi-XPP
2 Gb 400 Mhz PC 3200 RAM
200 Gb WD 7200 RPM 8Mb Cache
BIOS 3A19

Thanks for that

If you call the Acer technical support number (1-800-816-2237 USA), then you will hear an option for purchasing spare parts. However, if a specific part is defective, it will be replaced for free under warranty. I am sure they will just simply ship you a replacement DVD drive and request the other one shipped back.

anyone know of ANY bags for this thing?

thanks! that helps except of course for the fact that they seem to be closed this weekend so I probably won't get it shipped for a while now. But it is a great help.

a little 56k6 prob... ;-)

Well this is the one(Targus) I've got for now... Still lookin' for a great backpack...
For now this is a good option, have a look:

The case empty and open.

The case with my 1712 SMI (European, so a 5700Go with 64 Mb ) open and closed.

The frontpocket for your "brick" and some other supplies.

The backpocket for some documents.

I think it's really worth the money, but if you have to carry a lot around, a backpack would be nice...

So far the case.

I've been testing the 5700Go 64 Mb a bit, and what strikes me is that the original drivers(shipped with ur notebook) for the videocard are the best so far. I've tried a whole bunch from this site

Now I run the original drivers with nVidia Coolbits for the oc.

Results:

This is the maximum safe overclock.

This is what I run 24/7.
Not to bad for the 64 Mb version...

Wil test it with some Mushkin Black level II 3200 soon.

Is there a way to cranck up the FSB on this machine? Hardware/Software solution?
Yes, the original drivers installed for the NVidia GeForce FX Go 5700 have been excellent. I have not had a single problem with any of the many games I have thrown at it. I am sure it is getting tired of Knights Of The Old Republic though since that is the main game of the moment.
so they just put a full size hard drive in there? can you put a desktop graphics card in there?
Unfortunately not, but with since PCI-E is coming along nicely, it should be possible in the near future.
its the only laptop i have heard of with a 120 gb 7200 rpm drive though.

Backpack

Once again backpack messages are appearing. The STM Large Loop will hold our laptop and then some!. It has three verticle compartments. The laptop is suppossed to go into the middle one. However, ours is so large that it has to go into the back (closest to your back) compartment. Standing upright (empty) it is 20 inches high. The front most compartment has a deep mesh pocket in it along with two closeable pockets and a place for three pens. The straps are well padded and there are two pockets on the outside for water bottle, newspaper, or whatever else cyclindrical you want to put there. I'm really impressed with the design. Just do a search for one. They are Austrailian (sp) and they will ship to you and charge in US dollars. If anyone wants pictures let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Mayaman2: Yes, the Aspire 1700/1710 series use a standard 3.5" HDD so you can technically have up to a 250GB 7200rpm 8MB HDD desktop hard disk. This can obviously increase as a new wave of larger, faster desktop hard disks hit the market later this year.

what type of benchmarks does this monster get? it should beat my desktop.
