Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 23

thanks xedod,
the laptop works flawlessly in those 3d packages, although as you point out, the fx 5700 is not a recommended card by the alias people. this bad boy can move up to 1,000,000 polys almost in real time (20+ fps) in maya, max, etc. I was just wondering if the 5700 could be made to perform like a quadro fx card, i mean using overlays and such. i'm not complaining about 3d speed for modeling, just curious if anything could be made to make it even faster.

Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I got a 1712 and it's awesome.

I wanted to know if there was anything involved in installing XP Pro other than putting the cd in the drive.

Thanks for the help.

XP Pro

My experience with a 1714 suggests that you are much better to wipe the whole XP Home operating system and install XP Pro afresh on a clean partition rather than try an upgrade - too many legacy problems!

There's a note at the bottom of the nVidia download page.

From nVidia:

NOTE: GeForce2 Go, GeForce4 Go and GeForce FX Go mobile processors are not supported in this driver. Please contact the notebook's manufacturer for graphics drivers for your notebook PC.
Good thing you weren't harmed.

doublesixes look throught the post a couple of pages back there is a link for the website for a new inf file for laptops to work with the Detonator drivers. I suggest completely wiping the drivers you currently have on your system before you install the detonator driver. This will upgrade you to the latest driver and if you seem to have problems with the install use your CD to go back to the old driver.

One note I did not notice any performance difference going from the one on the CD to the latest driver so you may just want to stay with your current setup. As a matter of fact I took a performance hit when I went to the latest driver.

Hope this helps.

thanks guys,
i think i'll stay put with the factory installed driver, it's more than adequate for 3d modeling. max flies in d3d mode (direct x 9) with ogl (1.4) lagging behind a bit. over the weekend i'll install flight simulator 2004 which is the only game i play and will evaluate its performance. that game, on my fx 5200, 128 mb equipped desktop was only delivering 3-5 fps when all parameters were set to high. i'm not sure even the latest crop of nvidia 6800's can make that game playable at rates higher than 15fps...will see...

DFScotland

Not up and running yet: www.ers-limited.co.uk, which I think are based in Plymouth to those of you in the UK.

You should be able to contact them on +44 (0) 1752 331999 for general queries.

Got the website off the e-mail address DWStrickland forwarded to me; thanks for that, and the specs for my supermulti drive!
I have no idea how you got the contact at this company, I can't find them listed anywhere! A spare parts company for Acer, when even Acer (UK) say they can't supply spare parts is a difficult find, especially when they don't appear to be openly advertised.

Thanks Wraith.

Shows the value of this list.

Hi Everyone,

I have the 1712 with the stock 1GB PC2700 DDR SDRAM which is a Nanya (NT512D64S8HB1G-6K) modules and wonder if this is a "dual channel" memory ? I check the Nanya memory spec. and it did not mention "dual channel". BTW, is DDR-2 implies "dual channel" ?

Also, there is a post asking for a monitoring software (CPU temp, etc.) that works with the 1712, has anyone found one yet ?

Thanks.
i think the stock stuff is dual channel if im not mistaking...
The factory-installed memory will operate with the dual channel feature; however, it is PC2700 memory so it runs at 333MHz x 2.

1714Smi - Memory

Can you run this machine with 4GB of memory if one uses 2 x 2GB memory cards?

Thanks

hi, guys, i just got my new 1712 SMi, and i love everything about it and every ounce of it

few questions: i want to use Nero 6.0 Ultra Edition with DVD Shrink, but i've seen a lot of negative user reviews about Nero... any thoughts? can anybody suggest other similar programs? and anybody knows where i can get Nero 6.0 for cheap?

thanks, appreciate any/all feedback/suggestion.
Nero and DVDshrink work fine on my 1712. Gotta make backups of DVDs if you have kids. Man, they just love changing the DVDs themselves but it sure does play havoc with playback after a while of the rough treatment. The Wiggles are bad enough as it is. Imagine having to buy them twice because the old disks got messed up! Oh the humanity!

Has the price of a 1712 @ PCTorque gone down since it was first posted?

Hello all,

I have the 3,4 GHz version (1714smi) acer. I would like to use the cpucool but I would have to know the PLL chip type that is responsible for the FSB freq. I don't like that the fan is always on at least at the second level since the cpu is eating about 90 W even if I'm programming or surfing the net. If somebody knows the type of the PLL please let us know. It would help people who would like to use cpucool (or we would see that we can't modify FSB).

I also did an extended search on the underclocking/undervolting topics. I checked if there's any tool that I could use to lower the voltage and the freq of the cpu. There are some tools that can do this (even from the Windows) but this laptop is not supported by them. I either didn't find anything that could be used to access phoenix bios settings (if is there any, e.g the voltage/frequency control screen that is available on general mainboards using phoenix bios) that are not enabled/visible in the bios setup.

If somebody could help me in any of the above things I would be very happy.

Thanks,
Jeffy
