Northwood... benches higher runs cooler.. The Prescotts run hot..something that should be avoided in a laptop ..though this acer model your getting has a great cooling system. The Prescott isn't worth the extra money performance wise....

Good to know... can you tell me the exact info I would need to find and buy this one? What is the max speed? Wanna help overclock it? Ive never done that before. Thanks!!

If you want the BOXED version of the Northwood Pentium 4 3.4GHz, then you will need to search for Intel Part #BX80532PG3400D. It comes with a box and fan (which is not needed) but it does carry a 3 year warranty.

If you want the Prescott Pentium 4 3.4GHz, then you will have to search for an OEM version of the processor since Intel never released a boxed version of this processor (Boxed only offered up to 3.2GHz). Also, OEM processor do not come with the box or fan and do not carry Intel's 3 year warranty.

OK... its HERE !!

I am now officially in the club and typing this on my NEW 1712SMI stock machine.

My review...

The keyboard is smaller by 15% or so than full sized... this sucks...

I keep touch typing the wrong letters cause Im used to a wider keyboard.

When I go to hit enter.... I hit the 2 on the number pad... when I type an L I hit the enter.... They coulda fit a REGULAR key board in this much space.... truly the first BAD Impression.

Ok the Screen... WOW !!!

AAA+++

The only better screen Ive ever seen is the XBright by Sony....

I do wish they woulda got 1600x1200 on this... there ARE 17" with this setting.

Still... 12x10 aint bad and it IS a good screen. You boys who blow up stuff... I can see why ya like it. But for photoshop...I wish I had more room.

Oh, and I hit backspace A LOT... and this thing I hit 77777777 instead. Grrrr

Now... My 250WD should be here Monday or Teusday. ish... I hope.

The 4GB of Ram is here tomorrow or Friday at the latest. LOOK for a Happy or Very sad report then....

Acer Aspire 1712SMi Keyboard

Don't worry Rachel, you will get used to the keyboard. Why all the RAM and larger harddrive?
You don't need that partition. When you get the new hard disk, if you want a clean setup, just install the drive and then use the recovery CDs shipped with your system. It will restore the system to exactly the same way it was when you first turned it on.

Holy ****, thats a lot of ram, why so much?

Many folks have stated the temperature of their system. How do you do this. My 1711 seems hot after being on for a few hours. The fan is really noisey, not like my old compaq, which was really hot, but quiet.

I love this Acer, it was a great choice, and the screen makes my mother jealous when compared to her 32' tube TV picture.

I use Mobile Meter to monitor the temperature. You can google it. As for noisy fan, unless it is running some cpu intensive app. otherwise with a Northwood cpu it is quite when doing light work like surfing the web. With prescott cpu, it is noisy even when idle !!!

Ok, Acer released the Aspire 1800 recently (yesterday??) and it supports PCI and has the ATI X600 with 64 MB VRAM. Would this be a viable swap out part to upgrade the older Go5700 on the 1712? Is the VRAM sparate from the GPU? (ie could we use the 128 on the 1712 with the new GPU??) Any help from the modding pros??

Can find barely any information on the 1800!

All I've found, which isn't completely (although for the most part) marketting material is:

Here are the pics from Acer.

It does look quite nice, but to be honest, I do like the huge aluminium carved badge sitting on the top of the 1710!

Hi Ya... I hope I get used to it... I keep hitting the /// for my periods and and the 777 for my backspace... also the SPACE BAR needs a bit of a whack to work sometimes...

The HD is because I use 3 100+ GB drives nowwith external USB and this way I get it all on one.... I have lots of MP3 and videos... MUSIC IS LIFE !!

Sweet... I will install and just recover it generically with the CDs then. Do ya know what it is? Is it some resellers/dealers partition for restore without CDs? Ive seen that on some really cheapo barebones towers before...

A few reasons... #1 I CAN...and it seems no one else has tried. I like being the first and only. #2 its not really that much.... swap files use 2GB often... #3 I wanna see my aps SCREAM not walk slowly. I hate to wait.

In regards to the Aspire 1800, you can find details on this notebook if you look hard enough. In my opinion, it does not seem that impressive and definitely not a direct descendant or competitor for that matter to the Aspire 1710. It uses notebook memory, notebook hard disks, and a 17" widescreen 1440x900 display. This is entering a crowded market, whereas there is nothing else out there like the Aspire 1710 (17" desktop LCD, 3.5" hard disks, desktop memory, etc.)

It does use PCI Express Mobility Radeon X600 with 64MB (this chip is essentially the equivalent of Mobility Radeon 9700). Also, the GeForce FX Go 5700 and Mobility Radeon 9700 are essentially the same performance and feature wise. Unless you just have to have ATI, there is no reason to get this chip in my opinion.

In any case, here is a link to the notebook on Acer UK. http://www.acer.co.uk/acereuro/page4...crc=3630109857

Rachel:

You are correct. Acer puts a recovery partition on many of their systems. Since they ship the recovery CDs which perform the same task, I see no point in keeping that partition.

Kewl... yer the man with all the info... My drive arrives on Monday... I will install and restore it then and the RAM should be tomorrow afternoon. The BIG test... Say a prayer for it... if it works we can ALL have 4GB.
