Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 40

Thanks for all the input guys. I only have more question on the top of my head. Since the laptop uses a desktop hard drive, could I replace it with any other desktop hard drive and have it work and be able to use all of it? I hear the WD 250gb hard drives are nice but if I get a hard drive I would like it to be a 200gb seagate with a 5yr warranty from newegg.com. Or is the standard hard drive good enough for now? Any input is greatly appreciated.

Thanks a bunch
MAWS

I think DWStrickland put a 250Gb in his laptop and that worked fine.

I'm just sticking with the stock 120Gb for the moment as it's plenty of space for me. The computer has been extremely responsive to use and there's been no hard drive trouble.

Sorry to sound so positive ALL the time but seriously, this laptop has been great

Well, I just installed a brand new Hitachi 400GB 7200rpm monster into this notebook and it works flawlessly. I used Norton Ghost DOS BOOT disk to mirror my old hard disk so it took about 2 hours total and everything is perfect. There is nothing like having 90GB used space and 280GB+ free

Anyways, this drive is somewhat expensive right now around $400, but if you need loads of space, then it is nice to know this notebook supports such huge hard disk drives. Currently, the Hitachi DeskStar 7K400 is the fastest and largest hard disk on the market.

Dw, Im happy to announce that you probabely have the biggest internal harddrive in a Notebook IN THE WORLD. Did you take any pics of how you installed it? Was it easy,Hard? What is the average temperature of the drive?
Hehe... The drive runs no hotter than the previous Western Digital 250GB SE. The drive is very easy to replace in this system. It simply requires removing about 6 screws (10 counting casing around drive) and detaching the IDE and power cables/connectors.

The manual even shows the process if guidance is needed.

At how much did the previous 1 run at (temperature)

Cool DWStrickland. Thanks you so much for all the info ya'll. I got another question now. The onboard sound is AC97 correct? What is a good set of speakers that can take full advantage of it? Or should I just get the external audigy nx and klipsch promedia 2.1 thx?
yes it uses an integrated sound card but I have no info on how good the external audigy is. A good set of speakers for a resenable price would proababely have to be the Logitech Z-5300echeck them out here but if you want a hardcore Audio system then get the
Logitech Z-5500 here

Airsnort?

Has anyone successfully tried airsnort with this machine's wireless card? I don't know much, but I was wondering if the airsnort driver works with this card...

Thanks...

Has anyone instaled a firmware patch to the Acer Pioneer DVR-K12RA drive?
(Unfortunately I have 2 more region switches left and the patch I've found for Pioneer drive doesn't work)

Stay away from Audigy 2 NX, i really mean it. I used it and it sucks! Nothing to compare with the classic audigy 2 cards we had on desktop. Stay with the onboard, as u won't notice any difference. No treble/bass adjustments and no ASIO support. Not worthing!

The wireless chipset in the 1712 is Broadcom which is not compatible with Airsnort

Is it really possible to have a backlight issue really? Are they so sensitive? I made a test and put a complete white as windows background and I see a noticeable drop in the white at the top. Will Acer change the laptop if I show it to them or will they say that this is not a major problem?

Thanks for the responses.
I had the same type of problem, but my entire screen was darker, and it made the same noise. I took it to the Acer people and they replaced the lcd. Apparently it isn't a backlight problem. So if it is still under warranty, then they should fix it.

To upgrade to the 128MB GeForce FX Go 5700, you are going to have to buy that new card as a new Acer spare part and remove the 64MB card already installed. Here is the part number information you will need:

VG.A1509.007 VGA BD.128MB.FX5700.NV36M
