Does this hold true for the 1714...I kinda freaked when it came in today and it said 1710 on it when I orderd the 1714.

BTW...It's going back because of a bad pixel on the screen. I love this thing but after forking out big bucks for the computer, extra bucks for overnighting it and another $180 for a laptop bag to support it, I feel that I should be able to look at the monitor without staring at a defect.

Now it's only a single pixel but it bugs the hell out of me. Am I over-reacting or am I justified to demand a replacement?

yes all the 1710,1711, 1712 and 1714 are all part of the 1710 series.

Send it back ... Dead Pixs at the price we pay is uncalled for.... despite the industry standard. That is my call....

Mine should come tomorrow ... I was told they were going to check the laptop out for Dead/Stuck Pixels BEFORE they Shipped it. We will see.....

Hey $Circle$, let me know how it goes. I'm curious as to how widespread this dead pixel issue really is. If they can eliminate it (or at least reduce the numbers of bad screens) Acer can stand to make a lot of money with this laptop...especially if they focused on the gaming community.

I'm cross shipping mine and the new one should be coming in today. In less than 24 hours, I got the first one...let the company know that I had a dead pixel where they promptly placed an order for a new one which should be in around 11pm...same time I got the first one!

One of the things that I ensured before I placed an order was that I asked them if they would change it out if I had a dead pixel. They were cool with it.

Can't wait to get rolling with it!

Got my 1712 today ... charing the battery per
the User's Guide before turing it on -- Page 33. This is suppose to condition the new battery pack.

How long does it take to charge this battery pack to 99% with the laptop off? I can't find that anywhere in the manual.

Acer say 2 h off & 4 h on ,,,,, if i read right.
I just charged on in 2,5 h & take out & use with no battery.
& don't take off anything from MOBO , if you got the battery on , you gonna wait 15 min or so to get system running back again ( some safety )
You just be carefull with those little screws , they sux

IronSun -
Booted it up and connected to network to transfer files. THen I checked for DEAD/STUCK Pixels ... None!!

I must say the sceen is good but not near as good as the screen on the Sager 4750. Oh well, I guess that is the price to pay for the Nvidia Card and True OpenGL.

Question... this thing came with XP Home on it ... I want to wipe the hard drive clean and re-partition it to one large partition and load XP Pro without the Acer Image crap. Is there anything I need to look out for or do different since it is a laptop as compared to a desktop re-load???
No, you can format it/ partion it the same as a desktop.

ZZtop77, Does your 1712 show that the DVD is a DVD+/-RW in the devise manager under the System for XP pro and software used to burn DVDs?

I thought I was to get a DVD+/-RW as well when I purchased this laptop but all that shows up under the Devise manager and the DVD software I use is a DVD-R.

Hey rcbuggyman,

Did you ever resolve your flicker issues...I'm running into this also...seems like a potential power issue. I notice that it gets worse when the hard-drive cranks.

If you found a solution to this, could you share it?

TIA!

The LCD ended up going bad, I posted a few posts back about how I had to get my LCD replaced. It was still under warranty, so it didn't cost me anything, but it was a royal pain in the butt. I use the computer for school work, so not having it for 4 days was not fun.

Anyway, my LCD started to make a hissing noise when it turned on, then one day it just went dim. The brightness still worked, but it was already as bright as it would go, and it was extremely hard to see. So I took it and got it replaced. They told me that it wasn't the backlight.

I had the same monitor flicker but only when on battery.
Replaced the drivers with the standard drivers supplied and the flicker has gone. Don't know if it was the drivers i was using ( latest fron Nvidia) or if the problem will return but it may be worth a try.

Hey...has anyone heard of rumors that the 1714 is going to be discontinued? I know the 1712 was discon'd couple of months ago.. Reason I ask is I just checked some prices and a couple of vendors are now listing the 1714 (NEW IN BOX) at around 1775 (XP Home). Called one of them up and he confirmed the price and said that Acer is discontinuing the 1714 and his listings dont show a 1714XP PRO version anymore.

All the acer retailers in the UK now show no listings for the 1700 series laptops.. looks like i was to late to buy 1 and Acer have discontinued them.. Bummer :-(
Correction to this post.. several of the Largest retailers are no longer listing this series. The acer Uk home sits still lists it but they may be a little slow to update their own info.
