Discontinued in UK

After many phonecalls to retailers and Acer UK this morning it seems that the 1700 series has definitly been discontinued in the UK..I have had no success tracing any in stock... The US is the last place to have them ( for now) so if anyone still wants one.. better make your mind up soon..
PS.. all the retailers i spoke to said it was a very popular model and they cant understand why Acer have stopped it.. there is NO equivilent model in their range..:-(

Replaced the drivers with the standard drivers supplied and the flicker has gone. Don't know if it was the drivers i was using ( latest fron Nvidia) or if the problem will return but it may be worth a try.
Hey $Circle$....

Got mine about a week ago with a perfect screen (thank goodness)! I didn't want to put my supplier through all that again! They really went to bat for me. Thanks for the heads up on how things turned out for you

Feckewe...same here. No more flicker... I did the same thing, loaded the Nvidia drivers from their web site and got that weird flickering. Cant remember thought if I reloaded the drivers that came with the laptop... Mind is blowing out these days.

It's a shame they're discontinuing the 1710 series. Heck...the only reason that I had even known about it is when I happend to see it when sombody else purchased it. At the time, I had just purchased a HP zd7140...I wanted to cry.

The bottom line here is that if more people knew that it even existed, they would be all over it! The quality gap between the HP and the Acer unit is huge...never HP again. I'm always disappointed. Acer could really rock if they could get their boxes into the mainstream. As far a America goes, that would be places like Circuit City, Staples, OfficeMax, Best Buy...etc. They all sell crap at these places. And the price point for Acer fits right in their target market!

But I'm just a developer...

They changed the lcd? Shouldn't be changed the whole laptop as this problem is major? (lcd can't be fixed right? or they just rip off the whole lcd?).

Weird Enough

I just noticed a weird thing. When I downloading something from internet (i get internet from my 3com wireless router) & listen an mp3 at the same time, the sound breaks a bit frequently. The sound is perfect when not downloading. I thought there might be some h.d. probl, but i tried copying-pasting 1gb and the same time listen the same mp3 and the sound was crystal clear! This came to the conclusion that when the WLAN 802.11g is being used something happens to the sound. I tried uninstalling any progs installed lately but nothing. It is a very weird problem really!!!

As for the lcd problem I had, yes, I am in warranty period and I will take it straight to acer (I've delayed it enough but I had work to do).

i am not sure if the question had already been asked - but i was wondering what type of locks most of you are using?

Pingu,
I just reformatted my HD and I'm using the original video drivers that came with it. I run 3DMark03 and get a score of 3160. FarCry runs well until the top of the Japanese aircraft carrier, then it bogs down on me. I had Omega drivers and my score won only 1900. I may try again with those drivers and set everything to performance instead of quality.

A month or so ago there was a conversation about the screen making a funny noise, the screen flickering and then dimming. Well, that happened to me on Saturday. It's under warranty, and the ACER guy said the backlight probably went out. It left my office yesterday for a trip to Texas. I miss my computer. BOO HOO.

LCD is Dim when I start Up Laptop

Is anybody experiencing any problems with there LCD screen coming
on at the Window XP Pro splush screen dimmed very low upon
turing on their 1710 for the first time? Then when you turn it off
and turn it back on it comes up normally? I have a new 1710 doing
this and I am not sure if I should have it returned or not. Everything
about the screen works normal. This seems to happen about 80% of the time.

Thanks,

Thanks,
My screen is pretty dim (noticable) when I have my LCD turned off or after hibernation. But after about a minute its back to normal. I think it the LCD "warms up" during this period but if it constinatly happens there might be a problem.

Thanks for feedback Crappy_baka.... I will let the thing
boot completely up and give it a few minutes before
I do the "Ctrl-Alt-Del" thing. As soon as I get the XP Pro splush screen and it was dim I would do a quick warm-boot
and it would seen to come up correctly. Which would confirm what you are suggesting about the "warm-up" of the LCD. I will let you know.

Well it also happened to me on Saturday. The screen is now "very dim" with a slight flickering (like a dying fluorescent light) but there is no detactable hissing noise. It seems like that the LCD on this notebook have a very serious design problems. I am now reconsidering getting the 3 year extended warranty if that is still possible after 4 months from purchase date. I will contact tech support on Monday and let you all know.

Hi to everyone!

I have the Acer 1714SMI.
Because of my work I have the laptop connected to my adsl and turned on 24 hours a day for the last 4 months. I remember restarting the system 15 to 20 times without leaving it even once to rest.
In these 4 months I stressed the system as mush as it was possible: Playing games while writing DVDs, watching movies and downloading and writing DVDs etc. My score in 3DMark2001SE is 12800. I haven't tried the new benchmarks. The Temperature never exceeds 69 C for the CPU, 49 C for the HD and 78 for the GPU.

I had serious rendering problems with NFSU2 with the original drivers. I installed the latest Omega and everything works fine!
Also considering the limited performance of the graphic card I am very impressed from the performance in the latest games titles! If you like 1024x768 every game works perfect with every detail max! It's perfect!
I hope we will be able to install a better graphic card in the near future. But for now is not that important. I believe that everyone agry that the performance is better than every other laptop and many desktops also.

No problems so far. And consider that for 4 months it's always tuned on!
But I suppose these things are made exactly for this reason. To be able to work 24h per day.

It's the best laptop / desktop I had ever bought!

Also this is the best forum / thread I have ever read for laptops. It's awesome ( I think that the most suitable word is gargantuan ) and is very good to know that so many people share their problems and solutions with their Acer Aspire 1710-14 desknotes.

Many thanks to everyone and keep up the good work!

Also I would like to say about the LCD.

From the first time I booted the computer I noticed exactly the same thing. The screen is dimm and after a while it turns to normal.

Well, I am electronics engineer and my opinion is as you said above, that it needs a little time to warm up. Remember that it has automatic detection of the light of the environment.
Even if you have it disabled, the processor that sends the analog voltage to the backlight needs a little time to stabilize to the appropiate selected voltage.
I don't think we should worry about that.
