Well, I am electronics engineer and my opinion is as you said above, that it needs a little time to warm up. Remember that it has automatic detection of the light of the environment.
Even if you have it disabled, the processor that sends the analog voltage to the backlight needs a little time to stabilize to the appropiate selected voltage.
I don't think we should worry about that.
Thanks for the input. Happy to hear your 1710 meets
your needs and expectations. IT will be good if indeed
this is the case with the LCD and not a design problem
across the board.

Well, look it from a more electronics view. Lets say that the backlight needs 12V for the brightest level. You turn the computer on and emediately the backlight gets 12V, making it from the first millisecond to be in the brightest level. Well, I don't think that the backlight's life could exceed 6 months. This rapid change decreases a lot the life of analog equipment, like lamps.
By increasing the voltage from lets say 0 to 12V in a few seconds, it gives the time for the light to warm up before reaching its brightest level, enlarging this way its maximum lifetime.
Well I will try to contact Acer to solve this out.

LCD Problem (fixed)

I bring the notebook over to the service center and wait while they repaired it. After 40 miniutes the LCD problem is fixed . They replaced the "DC-AC inverter" with a part number description "55.A08V7.006 INVERTER BOARD AMBIT T18I066.00". It seems that the dimming of the LCD could be related to this circuit rather than to the backlight, which will required replacement of the LCD. With the investment I have on this notebook, I am getting the extended warranty for an additional 2 years coverage. Contrarory to the 15 days limit from purchase date on their website to purchase the extended warranty, the tech support told me that I can purchase it anytime within the one year period.

I had the same problem with the screen of my 1714smi. One day the screen started to flick and the next day went dimmed on the bottom. ACER UK toke 10 days to fix it. But the most bizarre think is that I have an extended 3 year waranty and in the waranty booklet they advise me to pack the laptop in its original box. When I got the laptop back from repairing they didn't send me the box! When I call them back they said that they sent the box for recycling???? Well although the 1714smi is a good machine Acer UK is a shite company. I called Trading Standards and to cut a long story short I'm taking Acer to court. So beware when you buy a computer from them you might as well be buying a problem. Just start by calling their custommer services in the UK and them press the key to track a repair to see if you can get thru and how long does that take you. Acer for me? Never again! At least in the UK.

Upgrade Parts

Just purchased a 1711 from Microcenter in New York, got it as a desktop replacement, it was last one available and price was real good. Now would like to know how to upgrade video card and add bluetooth. Have been reading the postings (they are impressive to say the least), noticed that the suggestions and part numbers are from ACER direct, I have an authorized dealer very close, should he be able to get them for me, and are the upgrades worth looking into.

2.8 GHZ P4, 1Gb 333 Ram, 80gb H/D, 64 Mb Nividia GeForce Go 5700.

I am reasonably computer literate, but this is my first laptop, and true attempt at performance based computing.

The main things that your are able to upgrade for now are the RAM (unbuffered, 184 pin, up to pc3200 with 2gb DDR) and Harddrive (ATA-100/133 ,3.5 inch). You can upgrade to the 5700 with 128 mb of vram but it seems to cost WAY too much but hopefully there will be another AGP GPU before all laptops step into the PCI-E areana (Crosses fingers for MR9800). I have almost no info about the CPU but I think its a socket 478 (please correct me if im wrong). As for the BT, you have to buy it as a spare part from ACER, it should also come with instructions to help you install it.

My Acer came home today after it's little vacation in Texas. The LCD is bright and crisp like new. It was the AC-DC Inverter. Still love this little (heavy) computer.

Auto Inverter ... How many WATTS are Needed??

I am trying to run this TANK (1712) in the Car
with a 400 Watt inverter... NO Go. Not enough
juice. How many Watts does this TANK need
to run from a Car Inverter. The inverter I purchase
states it is 400 watts with an 800 watts surge.

Any advice or others running this Tank from a car
plug-in?

Thanks....

The Car/alternator will certainly provide enough power to run
this laptop – Certainly if the engine is turning at 2000 RPM or more. Especially if all this Tank needs is 180 Watts.
I think it might be I am trying to run through the Cigarette Lighter.
I don't think the Cigarette Lighter will provide enough constant flow of electricity. I need to try and connect the inverter directorly to the battery and see if that will run it. Feed back to follow
after I try it.

Sorry, it took long then i thought
I just loan the power on board 400W (800W peak) from my friend & ?
It work just fine with no battery in laptop
With the engine on , i run it for 5 min & then played doom3 for 10 more min , but with no mouse
I turn off the laptop , then the engine & try run from the car battery for 5 min with no problem , after i turn the key in ignition to start , it start make under power sound , when i turn the key back , the sound stop ( car computer, head lights , fuel pump , you name it , it just suck too much Amps from battery )

BTW:that power on board make twice much noise than laptop

ZZTOP77, Why didn't you have the battery in? Don't you use the battery power very often? I have yet to get out and try a direct connection to the battery with the battery in. Soon I hope .... I have a Head Gasket to replace on my Jeep which has been taking up my free time.

Actually its pretty normal for a battery to start becoming "worn-out" after may charges and discharges. You can still have your battery in, and to make sure it dosnt lose most of its "capacity" just keep it plugged in and if there is a small power failure you wont lose all your work.

What work are we talking about ??????
I don't do anything important & power failure 1/year is past so few more months to go.
But you have point
I'm just not gonna charge my battery from full to full again & again if i don't need to

Still is portable desktop to me

The X600 is horrible (from what I heard). Its like the 9600 just a new chipset and PCI-E.
