Finally Happend...LCD Went Dim

Well...one of my biggest fears just happend. My LCD went dim...top half of the screen.

Prior to buying my 1714SMI, I had done a lot of reading on this thread and found this has been the case for some individuals but the performance of this beast outweighed the issues (hoping that I would not run into those problems).

First..dead pixels then this. Although the monitor is bright and beautiful, it's reliability seems to be in question.

It's been 40 days since I purchased it...bummer. Hopefully, I'll be able to get a swap-out instead of a repair deal. As an applications developer, I absolutley cannot be without a computer...not even for a day!

Just imagine if you had the same problem if you bought an alienware

OK Tank users .... Where can we get a carrying
case that this tank will fit in as well as the power supply?

Or do I need to just get a suitcase to pack and carry?

I really do not want to spend too much on a case to
house this tank.

I was looking for something in leather myself and bought this as an interim until I could find one. All of a sudden, I found that I'm very happy with it and am making it as a permanant one.

hello boys, my first post on here but have been following this thread for months, its a classic!!!

I bought me 1711sci in uk just before they decided to get rid of the 17xx series from their website and i have to say its quality machine. The only prob with it is that the screen was making a loud hissing sound and flickering about 2 minutes after powerup, then it would go dim in top portion of the screen and bright in the bottom. Major bummer. Got on to acer uk and they sent a courier to pick my beast up within 2 hours and now its with them, the bloke called and said they're replacing the LCd and the inverter board and that its quite a common problem. yay, i hope my baby comes back soon!!!!

Also, i thought i'd try and be a bit sneaky so i bought the 1711sci knowing it had the rubbish shared graphics, bought the machine for £800, and just ordered the 128Mb Nvidia card from Acer for £180, so that makes the machine the same as the 1712's and 14's for a lot less. Cant wait for it to come back from repair shop, i'll let you know how easy it is to upgrade from crappy shared graphics to godly 128 when it comes back!!!!!!!!!

Looks like in UK you got overpriced , if $2 are £1 (more or less) , 1711 you can buy for $1300 , even less if you are lucky , 1712 you can get for $1500 with luck & i saw 1714 for $1600 , but it last just couple h before was sold out .( Price i was put here was final , for brand new , no more for tax or ship.)

That's i tought the first time , get my self 1711 & upgrade ,,,,, but just upgrade the GPU make price same as 1712 & where you got difference 200 MHz on CPU , 512 MB RAM & 40 GB on HDD ?
So what real $$$ save are we talking about ?

Acer dosnt offer any service manuals. The Users guide has a nice layout and its components espically for upgrading the CPU,Gpu,HD,and disk drive. ofcourse thers also a troubleshooting section in the back.
