Acer Aspire 1710 Review - Page 46

yeh i think acer uk have now discontinued the entire 17xx series, they've done the same with a couple of other models as well like the 1622, which was a brilliant little machine. I think acer uk feel that the 17" widescreen 1800's are the way forward from now, i used to have 1800 and it was poor compared to 1711

1804 - slow HDD , 512 RAM & GPU just 64 MB , but if you upgrade to ATI pci-express X800 256 MB , upgrade RAM & change HDD to Hitachi 60GB 7200RPM , it will be some kickass lappy

IF the acer aspire 1804 use ATI X600 64 MB & IF is PCI -express , so why not ? I all ready ask around , but nobody try yet
Anyway , i got on mind MOBILE GPU , not regular from desktop
IF they make something like Nvidia Geforce FX go 5900 , something , what i can fit inside my lappy , i will upgrade too .

i dont think in all of the 61 pages of this thread that i've actually read of anyone upgrading their gpu whatsoever, maybe i'll be the 1st i assume it'll be like installing a new gfx card on a desktop though yeah? shove it in, restart the computer and then install new drivers, simple???????!!!???? I hope so anyway

The mostly upgradble graphic cards are for PCI-E laptops (and then its not an industry standart, just a company one). And as ZZTOP said if Acer creates an AGP 5900 or 9800 and it will most likely fit into the 17XX becuase of its removable GPU...ofcourse I mayb be wrong

Looks like you gonna be 1# heh , i give up because of $$$ what acer ask for it
But i did try 74 GB 10.000 RPM SATA Raptor HDD , i got it home, but no SATA / IDE adapter fit in there , so i give up my try .
As a $180 try end up in my friend desktop , so i got the $ back

Take out the battery before you start pull out some parts

Dead 1712!!

(My first post).

HELP!

Bought a 1712SMI off ebay for a bit too much. Worked fine. I took it
apart (HD, memory, GPU, CPU cooler) to check it out. Put it all back
togehter - now it won't POST. Agh!

- I am not a PC novice - been building and troubleshooting systems for
years.
- Power on, fans come on, power light comes on, DVD sounds like it's
initializing - but not a flicker from the screen. Sits there forever.
- I've taken it all apart again and put it back together - twice - no change.
Also I'm certain I didn't leave anything disconnected or put anything apart.

Sounds to me like Power Good is never getting set, so the POST routine
never even starts.

Since I bought it secondhand - no warranty!

Anybody know where I could get a new motherboard or inverter board,
if it comes to that?

Any advice welcome.

- Eric

Dead 1712, con't.

Oh, and I was dumb enough to NOT remove the battery before removing
the memory. What might I have fried?

I doubt you fried anything if you were not connected to AC power when removing the components.

It sounds like something is just not connected firmly. Did you make sure the LCD cable is attached firmly back to the GPU? Also, make sure the GPU is firmly attached in its socket.

Also, if you took the CPU and heatsink out, I would definitely double check those as well.

It also happened to me when I first took everything apart. At first I thought I fry it for sure, but after reinstalling the memory module again, the system works again. It seems that the memory module did not sit properly on the slot even if it feels like it did. YMMV.

Hi again to everyone.

I would like to ask a question to the guys that had their LCD or AC-DC inverter replaced. I read that there was a sound somewhere in the lcd. Where exactly?

I am asking that because of this:

I have all the time my 1714smi turned on because of adsl connection. And when I say all the time, I mean 24 hours a day for the last 4 months. No problems in any way. The system is rock-stable and everything works fine.

But since I read about the LCD problems, I concetrated for strange sounds that I might hear from the LCD. And I noticed the following:

When the monitor is off and then I turn it on, I can hear a very small hissing sound somewhere near the area where the power cable plugs in. Its so small that you have to put your ear near that area to notice it. If I prees Fn-F6 to turn the backlight off, the sound disappears and when I turn it on, I can hear it again.

I would like to ask every person that has the 1714smi to check it out and tell me if you hear the same sound or it's a symptom that tells me that the AC-DC inverter is going to fry. Also the people that had their LCD or inverter replaced, do you hear now this sound when the backlight is on?
hi yeh, my laptop just came back from the acer uk repair centre for the hissing which was accompanied by the screen getting dimmer at the top and bright at the bottom and flashing, almost like it was on 40hz refresh rate. Basically i wouldnt take quiet hissing like that as a sign for anything other than the fact that you've got your laptop turned on. I would imagine in your case that if its so quiet its just a regular sound that your laptop makes. The hissing that the other people in the forum and i have experienced is very loud and can be heard from across a large room. So, unless the sound actually becomes loud and/or the screen starts doing its funky dimming and flashing thing i'd say your machine is fine, relax. The turnaround on LCD replacement and inverter replacement was 14 days for me and its a stunner once again, no cost to me whatsoever.

Having experienced the LCD problem, your best diagnostic tool is whether the screen actually fails totally or partially. You'll know when this happens since mine made a hissing nosie, then it flickered a lot and then just went dim, almost like half power. Not just part of the screen, but the whole thing. It did have enough brightness for me to navigate and back-up the beast before I sent it on holiday for a week at the service center.

If you cannot discern any visual problems with your screen, then possibly the sound you here is a noisey fan, maybe with a bad bearing, or not totally balanced. Doesw tapping it a bit make any difference? You know it will have to fail before they fix it, so keep an eye on it.

Dead, 1712: new hope

To DWStrickland:

The LED (which I suspect means memory is still powered) was on while
I removed half the components. That's why I think I may have killed
something.

I have made the same gaffe with desktop systems a few times, but never
had a problem.

I've checked and rechecked everything I could see, blew out the connectors,
polished up the memory contacts, reseated everything I could find. I agree
it sounds like something just not connected right.

Since no change in fan speed and no beeps I'm assuming the POST isn't
running at all . Even with no video the fans should slow and I should get
the "POST-passed" beep.

To UNIC:

Are you a UNIX guy? (-: I am.

Did your system behave exactly as I described when you had your problem
with the memory?

Thanks all - superb forum.

Does it fit in there ? Is it working ? Anybody try anything else ?

Thanx for help
I has mine apart last night, and I checked for room for such a thingie.
Looks to me like definitely not. There's a wall in the case right about there,
which leaves enough room above it for the standard connectors, but
no room below them for anything. You might be able to cut out that
wall (!), but even so the motherboard is just beyond the wall. Just not
enough room.

Also, there is no point in going to SATA. The fastest (PC) disks around
can only do about 70MB/s platter-to-head reads, and even then over
only part of the platter's surface. (www.tomshardware.com)

ATA100 can handle 100MB/s transfers.

Since the system can only handle one hard disk, the ATA bus will
never be a bottleneck, 'cause it's faster than the disk could ever be.

You really can only benefit from SATA when you have more than one
drive at at time competing for the ATA bus - as with RAID. Then you
might max out ATA100 - *sometimes*.
