Some possibilities for a carry bag.

I really do not want to spend too much on a case to
house this tank.

I just spent a couple hours at Fry's with a tape measure, looking at all the
cases they had. Here's what I found:

- Many so-called 17" cases are within 1/2" of fitting - 1/2" too small.

- Every case I looked at had MINIMAL padding - like 1/8" of hard padding.
Some only had it in a couple spots.

- I found NO backpack-type cases that will fit.

- I found a few that will fit:

- Targus TLE 400 (leather satchel/shoulder carry). $70
This seemed like the best bet - fits well, well made. Looks like it will be
a pain to get the system in and out though - narrow opening that doesn't
open all the way down as I recall. Owners please comment.

- Targus XL (nylon, etc.) $60
Fits well, minimal protection. Satchel/shoulder carry.

- Targus XL Rolling (wheels on the bottom plus extending handle). $99
Fits well. This is not the same bag as the Targus XL; this one is larger,
has much more room, padding, compartments, etc. But it's relatively
big.

Since I'm cheap (-; I rummaged in my closet to see if I had anything that
would work until I found a good deal on a 'real' case. I found one - a
giveaway I got at a posh USB developer's conferece I attended a few years
ago. The only tags I can find on it say "Leed's" (manufacturer?), and
ASI66887/Style 8700-08/PO number 6694/Made in Indonesia. It fits
perfectly - but no padding at all.

Since I'm cheap (-:, I wondered if I could hack up some high-density foam
I have to insert in the various slots in the case for padidng. I used some
1/2" high-density closed-cell foam that I bought at an auto parts store -
they're intended as interlocking nonslip/foot comfort mats for standing on
concrete for long periods. Much hacking and tweaking later, I have a
heavily-padded case - better than all the ones I saw at Fry's. In most
cases I could just work a slab of padding into slots above and below the
system intended for papers. The only problem is there's no room for padding
on the bottom - the side at the bottom when you're carrying it (!).
I'm going to have my wife make a little bag for a pad there that I can
attach with velcro.

There's enough room in the various compartments on the front for the
power brick, and extension cord, LAN cord, and Logitech USB trackball.
My system is now better protected than in any other case I saw. (-:

I just remembered - more possibilities:

I was at a computer swap last weekend (huge one here in LA) and found
a vendor selling all sorts of bags and cases. None fit BUT I did find a nice briefcase
and a rolling bag that will fit. The briefcase was a close fit - barely enough room to
cram some padding around it. There is enough room to add padding in the rolling
case.

I did some searching and this is what I found:

Corsair TwinX 3-4-4-8
TWINX2048-3200PT
$509

Corsair TwinX 3-3-3-8
TWINX2048-3200PRO
$540 Monarch

Kinston HyperX 2.5-3-3-7-1
KHX3200K2/2G
$560 ZipZoomFly

Corsair 3-4-4-8
TWINX2048-3200
$487 Monarch

****Cheapies*****

Patriot Signature PSD1G400 1GB DDR400 PC3200 CL3
$175 per 1G x 2 = $350

Corsair VS1GB400C3 1GB DDR400 PC3200 CAS2.5 Value Select
$189 per 1G x 2 = $378

Wintec AMPO 184-pin 1GB DDR PC-3200, Model 3AMD1400-1GB-R CAS 2.5
$155 per 1G x 2 = $310

PQI POWER Series 184-Pin 1GB DDR PC-3200, Model MD441GUOE CAS3
$159 per 1G x 2 = $318

Will any of these not work? When I buy a "pair", do they have to come that way, or can I just buy

two of the same thing? You can see that if I buy 2 wintec modules, I spend $310 whereas I buy the

Kingston, I spend $560. I can't justify the markup of $240 if I just get a smidgon of performance.

Or will the cheap solution just not work?

I am really a cheapskate and would prefer to go cheap if the stuff works, but will spend the extra

money if I know that the cheap stuff will cause nothing but BSOD, or freezes.

I saw one of these things at MicroCenter. To say it's huge is an understatement, and heavy. I thought I would get a hernia just lifting it. The palm rest area is massive and the display is nice, not widescreen so somehow it looked even larger than 17 inches. This laptop if it's even ok to call it that looks like a throwback to another era, sort of like those Cadillac Eldorado boats from the 70's.

Do we have any news about graphic card upgrade? Go6800 or anything else? It's Christmass, I want to make a gift to my overweighted baby.
Also I am planning to purchase external USB Hard disk, probably 200GB. Any advice?

panther, i think its safe to assume that there will never be any other graphics cards available for the 17XX series beyond the nvidia 64 and 128mb solutions purely and simply because Acer have withdrawn the entire 17XX series in the UK and they told me that its only a short matter of time before the same happens in the other places its sold I think therefore that they wouldnt bother to produce a new graphics solution for a series that they are getting rid of, my source for this, Acer UK. Besides, the 17XX been out for ages now and they havent shown any signs of bothering to create a new solution, why start on a platform that may be coming to the end of its life?

Good point and well said. But since the GPU is removable what if Acer made an AGP Nvidia card for the Ferrari series. You could posibly order it as a spare part and place it in. Thats my theory of course

See my post #962.

Note I did NOT physically stick the system in one of these cases - but
I did measure the interior space with a tape measure. The Targus cases
I listed all should fit well (not barely). Check the dimensions - the
system is 15"x12.75"x3" - so figure 15x13x3 as a minmum. The 13"
measurement is the one that causes all the problems. Many cases are
12 or 12.5" - which is not enough.

This is the KEY Min. measurement.... make sure the TANK
will FIT INTO 15" x 13" x 3" before you buy.

The Targus TLE400 fits and has additional pockets for the power pack, papers etc and a shoulder strap. Quite nice leather and a side pocket for the mobile phone

See http://www.targus.com/us/product_details.asp?sku=TLE400
