Acer 9810 / AS9810-6994 - 4Gig Memory Upgrade

Hello,

I purchased 2 X 2G Samsung memory modules for a total 4 gigs and cannot get them to work in my system. Acer seems to be useless and said to buy other modules... these must be bad. Yet I have now gone through 3 RMA's with the memory company. I'm using Samsung originals.

My bios read 3096 MB not 4. This doesn't make any sense. I'm using Windows Xp Pro Media Edition on an
AS9810-664 Core Duo T7400. Can anyone assist please?

32 bit systems do not recognize 4gb of ram, you need a 64 bit OS. You can keep RMAing them, that's not gonna change the fact that there is and OS limitation, not bad ram.

Ah now I learned something... thank you very much. What can I do to make the ram work? Just upgrade the OS and if so what version is tried and trued? Thanks again.

You will need to install XP or Vista 64-bit. That of course requires new 64-bit hardware drivers.. you'd have to see if Acer has them on their site for your model.

Using 32 bit Vista your machine can see betweem 2.5 and 3.25 gig of ram. Upgrading to 64 bit it will see all your memory but you could see other problems.

Its a bit late but may help other 9810 users and owners, I've tried to upgrade one of these to 4GB, I had one RMA of Crucial memory which I find very reliable, the I got kingston memory, I could not get XP to run at all with 4GB, but I got vista to run. Vist runs without too much trouble unless it hibernates or has trouble shutting down, then you need to remove 1 2gb stick to boot then you can shut down the best then add the ram again.

Interesting observation here - that extra RAM can actually give issue to hibernation and shutting down. Tried another set of ram modules and brand?

cheers ...

I've only tried kingston and Crucial

doh!

Thats interesting
when i was running windows 7 64 bit, with 4gb it only said 39*** something was in use, now i am using vista home premium 32 bit it shows all 4gb in use? (unless windows 7 shows more detailed info, under systems)
its funny where i work all the pcs are the same spec and ghosted from the same disc, but they all have different problems...go figure
