Brightest 17-inch laptop?

Any opinions on which of the current 17-inch laptops (Sager, Alienware, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Gateway, any others??) has the brightest screen? I've been zeroing in on the Sager 8790, but noticed in a Circuit City today, that the HP 17 inch z7000 was much dimmer than the Toshiba p25, even though they had the same graphics card, processor, and RAM, at a 1400x900 resolution with a wide screen. This got me thinking about the Sager's brightness.

In researching further, I noticed that some vendors, like Fujitsu, for their N5010 16.1 inch desktop replacement, talk about their "Clear Bright" technology, that is supposed to have a contrast ratio of 600:1, or up to 40% brighter than most large laptop screens. The salesman at the store then remarked that Toshiba screens are better than HP's. This got me thinking about the Sager and Alienware screens, which have been by two main contenders so far. Any thoughts??

Am posting this in the Alienware forum also.

thanks.

ACER's 172x is suposed to be the brightest. Don't know about contrast and what not. It is 4:3 screen and not a wide-screen display.

G-Omaha, would you characterize your 8790 display as bright and crisp? Thanks.

The Alienware Area51m isn't available with a 17", the biggest they have is a 16.1" UXGA.

The special Alienware was running where they delivered a basket of fruit with the system expired last month, I believe.

Arent they all the same screen? (barring the 4:3 acer).

yes. maybe the brightness settings vary depending on the computer with the screen.

Probably true, but the maximum brightness shouldn't, unless the ODM decides to limit it for some reason, and I cant see why anyone would. Maybe they do though, I've never even seen a 17" laptop so I'm only speculating.

One thing I'd say though is dont trust everything a salesman says, even comparing their own goods. They'll (most of them) put more effort into sounding like they know their stuff than they do genuinely helping a customer. It is probably generally true that Toshiba is better than HP, due in no small part to Toshiba's (proprietary?) CASV tech and unique screens. That Fujitsu you mention is also reported to be quite a screen.

In the case of the 17" widescreen though, there is only one, and everybody uses it. Any difference you see between the screens on different laptops is very likely just software or brightness settings.

8790's screen is a joy to use and beyond my expectations -- with a widescreen display I was most afraid of uneven lighting... I would hate to see dim spots in my peripheral. This LCD has not disappointed; 2 friends and I were sitting in front of the screen and the first thing they both said was how impressed they were with the viewing angle...
(ok so maybe they said something more like "oooh that screen is much better than MY laptop's!" but I don't think I'm overstepping my interpretation heheh)
