m9700 and Supreme Commander

Thread Starter
i recently posted on the Supreme Commander webforums asking if the m9700 im ordering could handle the game, its the AMD Turion™ 64 Mobile ML40 2.2GHz 800MHz, with 2gb of memory and the dual 256mb GFX cards (SLi)

i was told by a member that the game would run like crap, now is this true? would upgrading the cpu to 2.4 be any big difference? after all it is 250 dollars more..

It would still run like crap unless you can get a 3.0 GHz cpu (which you cant) or a dual core cpu (which you cant really do...)

I don't see why it wouldn't run fine on the m9700. Looking at the specs, it recommends a 3.0GHz Intel or equivalent AMD (but it will run on less) - don't forget you can't directly compare AMD GHz with Intel). They also recommend at least a 6800 nVidia or ATI 1800 card. The 7900 GS will best both of these.

IGN' review made these comments on specs: Though anything built within the last few years or so should be able to handle Supreme Commander, even the most powerful computers will likely have issues with eight player online battles. We ran the game on max settings with a Pentium 4 3.40 GHz processor, 2 GB RAM, and a 512MB Radeon X1900, and had a generally smooth experience, though it really started to bog down as more participants jumped into the fray.

Going from the 2.2 to 2.4 CPU may help some, but doesn't seem like it is worth the $$ to me. Remember that the m9700 is more powerful than a large percentage of desktops out there. Many people on other forums aren't familiar with it, or with the AMD processors. It sounds like the game may give most systems problems in very large battles. Do you know if it takes advantage of Dual Core processors? Most games don't, which is why the single core Turion can keep up fine.

If you're worried about it, you can wait for the m9750, but assume you've already looked at that option if you are just getting ready to order the m9700. Hopefully, one of our m9700 owners who has experience with the game will stop in and post their comments.

Get a dual core CPU

i wish i could, but altogether that would cost me an extra 1000 bucks just to play this game, the 9750 is quite pricey, and i cant get a student discount on it

They did a huge thing on supreme commander and what it takes to run it. If ur gona invest in a notebook, get a dual core CPU. Even if u have to change notebook companies or look at another model type i think its worth it. I had a 2.0GHZ AMD Turion and that thinng was garbage in my opinion. I have an Intel dual core CPU and everythng i do is 1000x easier. The reason ur rig is so expensive is cuz its an AW. They start those things out at 2K. Id say go w. another comapny if ur on a budget, AW to me is just way overpriced. By the look of things, dual core is 'in' and single core is 'out'

You're entitled to your opinion, but AW compares reasonably well to similar equipped systems these days. The m9700 starts out at $1500+, and you can put together a good system in the 2K range.

Has anybody answered the question as to whether Supreme Commander actually utilizes both cores of a C2D (since most games currently don't)?

SupCom has been made from the ground up to take advantage of dual core cpu's
post #12 of 19
I do believe Supreme Commander does support dual core CPU's, gamespot did a review using intel dual core cpu at a crazy 2.93Ghz and w/ the more units on the screen the harder it is for the PC 2 keep up. To help u, ill compare my 2.0 Turion and C2D 2.16 When i ran system requirements lab, my AMD 2.0 regestered as 2.29 performance wise. Running it again on my 1705 my C2D is rated at a whopping 5.39 performance wise, which blows the AMD CPU out of the water. If ur looking for a gaming laptop, I think a dual core investment would be wise. U will see as games come out they will be dual core supported. U can see my sig for my sepcs and I paid 1770 and this thing has no hickups whatsoever.

If Supreme Commander can take advantage of C2D, and that's an important game for someone ... I'd have to agree it would be best to go with a C2D computer.

Yea man just go w/ C2D. If ur on budget perhaps look at another manufacturer or model type??? Hope it helps

I have been running SC on my m9700 and it runs ok. The cpu is a great deal of a bottle neck on the game, but it does run well enough to play and not be annoying. It is an awesome, but very demanding game. I love the level of the detail...

I am going to be selling my m9700 probably in a few months and getting a m9750, just because I have fallen in love with C2D, I have a desktop with one and I am just absolutely amazed at the performance on this thing.

I am still waiting on 88xx cards and sli that works in vista however...
