Cons to +RAM and +HD space on MBP

Hey i've decided that i will definitely be getting an macbook pro as my laptop for college. I'm going to wait until the next update, or atleast for leopard before i buy it. I will be using windows and possibly some high powered engineering programs on windows.

I don't mind spending extra cash if the 3gigs of RAM or bigger HD space is needed or will greatly increase performance, but are there cons other thne the budget?

will 3Gigs of ram or 160 or 200GB HD increase weight significantly?
How about battery life and heat?

How much is the upgrade from 2Gig to 3gigs of ram really worth?

thanks

A new drive and ram will be insignificant to the weight of the laptop unless they're made of lead.

Also the reduction in battery life from more RAM will be insignificant...depending on the hard drive you get it could be noticeable or not.

Depending on what you want to do 3 gigs could be worth it. Whatever you do, however, don't purchase the RAM from Apple; they're waaay too expensive. Buy it and install it yourself.

yeah, weight won't increase here. Also, it seems that the only thing that may affect battery life is the hard drive spin speed (5400 rpm, 7200 rpm, etc.), but even that doesn't seem to make a noticeable difference.

So far, 2 gigs of ram may be enough. If you find you need more later, you can always upgrade. It is pretty simple to replace yourself, and the guys at pbfixit.com have provided assembly guides.

Also, I second Kakaze in saying that it is not worth it to upgrade ram through Apple (or any computer company, for that matter). A quick look at Newegg.com will show you that

Keep on asking questions here before you buy. Research is good before dropping such a huge wad of cash hehe

2gb is a decent amount of ram for anything. Having more ram will increase battery life slightly since it won't have to access the hdd as much. Having more ram and hdd space won't make any noticeable difference to weight. Going for the max of 3gb will put a dent in your wallet though and probably won't benefit you that much.
