1080p LCD recommendations

I'm looking into a 1080p LCD TV to really be my main monitor for my laptop. So, DVI would be the connection method

I'd love some recommendations. My price max is about $1300 and I'd prefer to keep it in the 32" range.

Also, do you guys think I'd be happy working with 720p instead (this is for gaming, web browsing, everything you'd do on a computer)

Nothing wrong, it's more the fact that within the year I need to get an LCD TV for my room anyway, for sales purposes of the house. So I was looking around and thought I could possibly hook up my laptop to the LCD while I wasn't using the TV as, a TV.

Could I ask why you think I wouldn't like it?

1080p at sizes below about 50 inches aren't going to show much discernable difference as a TV. Few if any truly utilize beyond the 1080i range anyway. A LCD that can show 1900 X 1200 would be a better investment IMO. Still giving you the ability for the higher res without limiting. Something like a Samsung Syncmaster 305T.

Could you guys give any recommendations on a TV in general then (LCD HD) of any sort? I know I'm getting one most likely, so I might as well look for a little advice

a true 1080P TV will have a resoultuion of 1920 x 1080.. I have been meaning to hook a laptop up to my 37" Westinghouse 1080P LCD, but I'm sure it will look great. I'd also highly recommend that TV and I got it before Christmas 2006 for $999. It's probably cheaper now..

I think costco has it for $799 right now, no built in tuner so it is an LCD monito or sorts, do you need a built in tuner. (the 37" westy is prob the Big LCD TV/Monitor of choice)

Can I ask what the TV tuner does? Does it automatically take (when the cable is hooked up) the channels and find the hi-def ones and process them without an external box? Or does it do something else?

People who are using LCDs for computer monitors seem happy with the Westinghouse units. I don't think you can go wrong with a Samsung - if you're going to use it with your computer, try to get a 1080p version. For TV, 720p (preferably 1080i) will be fine.

For more info, visit AVS Forums ... lots of good info there.

Do you think I'd be happy gaming on a 720p TV (or 1080i)? It's more of something I'd do on occasion rather than all the time.

As long as you don't plan on sitting right in front of the LCD, you'll probably be okay. Note that quite a few of the 360 games are 720p or 1080i - there are very few 1080p games out there right now. The main issue will be text ... If the game doesn't have much text in it, you'll enjoy it more. I see very little difference between 1080i and 1080p, and 720p isn't all that bad - particularly on a smaller display (e.g. less than 40").

If you're going to be hooking it up to your computer, make sure it has the appropriate inputs (depending on your PC, you'll need a VGA or DVI output - you can use adapters in some cases.) For example, I hooked up my notebook to my Sony LCD with a DVI to HDMI cable.

In addition to being acceptable for gaming with the 360, would a laptop/comptuer look good too? Obviously it wouldn't be as beautiful as a 1080p TV and that concerns me since I would love to have a giant HDTV to game on occasionally, but if 720p is acceptable...it's far more economical.

I would recommend the Sharp LC-32D62U for about $1000 (you can actually get their 37" model for about$1300). Sharp have the best colour representation and the best black level that I have seen on a LCD, it's the closest that I have seen to a Plasma. I personally use their 46" model both as a HDTV and PC monitor and I have compared all the off brand (Westinghouse, Olevia, etc) as well as named brand like Samsung, Sony and JVC before I settle on the Sharp. If you do a lot of gaming, you might want to t look at their LC32GP1U which is design for gamers.

yep, the Westinghouse 37" 1080P LCD doesn't have a tuner, so it's only a monitor. Works fine for what I needed though, it's my kitchen TV/Wii monitor. I know it's kinda silly to have a 1080P monitor with no 1080P playing on it (digital cable here only does 1080i), but the 360 used to be in the kitchen also. and probably one day I'll have something that plays 1080P in there, like maybe a new HD cable box.
BTW, the picture on it is great, especially on a channel like Discovery HD. I love just watching whatever is on the screen, even if it's a bug getting eaten by a bunch of ants, it's so clear..

and all the tuner does is tune in an OTA channel, but I'm not gonna hook up an ugly antenna just to get a free signal..

Then you are missing out on the best signal for HDTV possible. OTA ATSC signal is the best signal for 1080i with the least amount of compression. Much better than Digital cable (which compress a lot of their HD signals) and Satellite TV (still some compression but better than cable). Also, you won't need one of the big fishbone antenna anymore for HDTV. Current HDTV antennas are much more compact and can be place at the edge of the roof.

I really think I'm getting the Sharp LC-32D62U. My mom is pretty much like "if you get all A's on your final exams, I'll give you $800 toward a new TV or computer ^_^ so probably i'll get that, along with a new DX10 PC hopefully

I'll deal with the not as good resolution from the cable company (which I still find outstanding) and not put an antenna on my roof.. I had the house built with cable outlets in pretty much every room so I don't have any ugly wires running across the outside and I'd like to keep it that way..

Thats a pretty good idea. My parents own a 100+ year old house currently and we have a couple sets of cable wired around the house because of course we didn't have it pre-installed
