Any problems upgrading from XP Home to XP Pro?

hello,

i was wondering if the laptop comes with xp home and i buy xp pro, and install xp pro over xp home, will this present any problems? will doing this blow away xp home?

the reason i ask is because non profit org's get a discount on software and i can purchase xo pro (not an upgrade version) cheaper than the $79 than it costs to buy it with the laptop.

thank you.

ps. yes, i'm trying to save money (smile)

You work for a non-profit, or are affiliated with one? Are you buying on behalf of the non-profit, or are you using them to get cheap software?

Do a clean install of XP Pro....except no substitutions in exchange of this lol

Yup...clear the partitions...format the C drive...install fresh clean copy of xp pro...you can do this manually w/ a boot disk using FDISK and Dos commands or you can just pop in the XP Pro disc and do it through there...immediately after completion of XP Pro installation put all the windows updates on there...it'll stabilize your system to a state of pureness...in preparation of the damage we all do by simply by using the computer lol

hi element.

thanks - formatting the c drive is not a problem. my laptop probably will not come with a floppy disk - which makes me wonder if something new will come out to accomodate the people that no longer have floppy drives on their laptop.

good point, about installed all of the windows updates immediately.

that is funny . . the damage we do, by using the computer.

thanks

About the notebook not having a floppy drive..that doesn't matter because you can burn the files that would originally be on a bootable disk having the utilities like FDISK and such onto a bootable CD...works like a charm. Regarding a reason to not install XP Pro over XP Home, I think that statement in itself has truths and revelations lol. Basically, if a computer comes with XP Home preloaded a user basically has two options if they want to use XP Pro:

1. Clean install of XP Pro
2. Dual boot of XP Pro/Home (if it's even possible - I've never tried)

So basically, in order to install Pro "over" Home you have to wipe out home or dual boot. Also, it's important to note there is no such thing as upgrading XP Home to XP Pro. So how one would upgrade from Windows ME for instance to Windows XP..that works..but there is no Home to Pro upgrade available...hopefully this answers your questions...

element,

i guess i should not have used the word "upgrade". i think it would have been better if i said are there any problems installing xp pro over xp home.
or does it not matter with xp.

thanks

You don't need to burn anything, nor do you need a floppy. The XP Pro CD will give you the option to format.

Andy, just curious.... why do you need to know or care about Indera's involvement in the non-profit organization?

I think its meaningless to have a dual boot of home and pro because pro has all the features of home and more!!

Just clean up your act, the HDD and install XP-Pro fresh. Plenty of threads dealing with this process on the forums...use a simple search to find all the info you need
