Does anyone know where I can get newer firmware? I have 1.01 and I just found out tonight, after buying 2 Blue-Ray movies, that it won't play them. Dell says it's the firmware and it needs updating, but they don't have it yet. Dumbasses. WTF are they selling systems that don't work? Don't they test them?

Pirates of the Caribbean The Curse of the Black Pearl and Dead Man's Chest. Both Blue-Ray, both bought at HMV. Tech guys at Dell said that it's the firmware of the Mitshita ROM drive. The movies start up and play through the trailers, but as soon as it comes to the menu there is no control. It stays there, unclickable or anything so I can't start the movies.
seeing lots of people reading the threads but not commenting on it. Is anyone else having the same problem?
I found a place online that has the newer firmware, but seems to only be usable on Sony laptops. It's the same model number drive and all and firmware 1.03, but again, only for Sony laptops. Does anyone know how to extract the firmware ROM from the file?
http://vcl.vaio.sony.co.jp/download/SP-013172-03.html
The site is in Japanese but if you go down to the bottom and click on the green button it will download the file. The exe is in English. If anyone know's how to extract the ROM it would be awesome.

seems like I answer my own threads more than anyone else on here.
After looking most of last night and today I've found TONNES (yes, I'm Canadian) of threads and posts and forums and everything else for people looking for the same thing and having the same problem. The only firmware that I can find is from Sony and they are up to 1.05, but it only works on Sony laptops and not Dell, the cheap bastards. I found that the biggest issue is that the blue-ray movies aren't "clickable" in the menu. You can't use the cursor to browse around but you can use the arrow keys and the enter button to play the movies. Not an easy thing for me at least when I have it hooked up to my entertainment system and trying to watch my blue-ray movies that way. But at least it's working somewhat.

Not to thread
but I have another problem on the same line as the OP. My step-duaghter recieved a Compaq laptop for her graduation present and she was trying to watch a movie using Windows Media Player. The movie looks great, however, there was no sound at all. Contacted tech-support and they said that it is a know issue with the new media player and we would have to install third party software to get it to play the sound. What kind of crap is that?
Has anyone else heard of this problem before??

that sounds like it's just a codec issue, not the player. Though I must say that I'm using the PowerDVD DX that came with my system. Not a fan of using WMP for DVDs, or even video files - I use ZoomPlayer. WMP is not as simple for adjusting codecs and such.

for codecs in general. There's a Vista codec pack that I downloaded from somewhere too, I got the link from DriverHeaven.net but not sure where the actual link is. I'll keep looking if you need it.
UPDATE: within 1 minute, lol. Just google Vista Codec Pack and it's the first hit, and it's a free download.

Comrade, I use the CCCP
(Combined Community Codec Pack)
for those that didn't get the joke, CCCP is the abbreviation in the Russian alphabet for USSR.
However, I hear the Vista Codec pack is quite nice too.

open the Device Manager and find the Matshita ROM drive. Double click on it and go to the details tab. Under Property select Hardware Ids and you should see something like

honestly, not a clue. I was just going on what the Dell technician told me over the phone. Not a big fan of Dell other than the contracts that they have with nVidia and Intel with being able to release components before other manufacturers. They have nice computers, somewhat, but the technicians aren't well informed and I've had SO many problems with them. This laptop is actually my second replacement system. I started off with the XPS Gen2, then XPS-M170, now this.

Region B problem
I also have problems with playing Blu-Ray discs on my XPS m1710. The driver is MATSHITA BD-RE UJ-210 ATA, and I got the same hardware ids as you (1.01).My problem is that when I insert a Blu-Ray disc, the Power DVD player says that "This disc has been coded for Region B only and will not play in this machine. Please eject this disc and play on a Region B player".
The machine is bought in Sweden and presumably built in Ireland. Both of these countries are part of Blu-Ray region B.
Apparently the wrong region is set, but I do not find where to set the region. There is a "DVD-Region" setting in the MATSHITA driver properties, and that I have set to "2". This does not solve the problem.
If you feel like scaring someone I recommend that you call Dell support and tell them that you have a Blu-Ray player. They will immediately tell you that the only thing they know how to solve is DVD problems and that Blu-Ray is unkown to them and then try to redirect you to some other support office of Dell (I didn't know they had so many).
There is only one Blu-Ray related update for XPS m1710 on the dell support site, and that is related to Power DVD (which I have installed and it did not help).
I too would love to get a firmware update from wherever possible.
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit.

that one is an easy one to fix actually. If you have the PowerDVD DX installed (the one that came with your XPS-M1710) and you've updated it, then it's simple. Open the program and you should see a menu on the left hand side. Go to SETTINGS. In there you'll see another menu on the left and click on BD SETTINGS. In there you can change the region. I got my XPS in Canada and in there I can select Region A, B or C.
