Thank you!
Let me tell you, you know more about Blu-Ray players than a gaggle of DELL support technicians.

- Any luck on firmware update?

no, still waiting. Been okay with Blu-Ray movies lately until just now. I bought a bunch more and they all seem to work except for Young Guns, a 1988 movie. Go figure. Not sure why, but it just keeps stopping and taking 100% of system resources. Other movies, like Blood Diamond and Alexander run no problem, but Young Guns crunches my system and makes it unwatchable.

I ran the update in PowerDVD DX a few days ago and it found a Blu-ray update and after the update my newer discs will now play on my M1710. I have tested Spiderman 3, Fantastic Four 2 and Day After Tomorrow and they are working now.

I think I have a new problem for you. I've upgraded my powerdvd dx to the latest and greatest, also running a beta driver on my nvidia 7950 gtx and yet I get this error: fail to enable hdcp, video card may not support hdcp or video card driver not up to date error code= 0107 so it won't play blu-ray dvds. does anyone have any ideas what to do?

Put the Dell video drivers back on and it will most likely work.

Back to the original question...firmware? Region?

Is there any hope of a firmware? or a way to set the region code. I cant even make a backup copy of a regular dvd because of region code setting...any help?

I understand and can obviosly watch blue rays and other dvd on the computer...just not make backups or for that mater rip to the hardrive for my media center setup..

and FYI this is on a DELL XPS M1710 ...so all the sony updates are a no go!!!
Thanks

Sorry i just updated my listing...its on a dell machine, so the sony updates are a no go!
Thanks

You're talking about Blu-ray writer firmware arnt you>? They dont need to be from dell to work.
Yes I am. And I have done a TON of hunting and just tried again with the linked updater and it is not compatable with my drive...it says "for uj-210 vaio your drive does not match. The sony drive is a UJ-210S and this firmware would work on it..but mine is a UJ-210.
My drive is know as:
A Matshita BD-RE UJ-210
or
Panasonic UJ-210WDB1-B

I have tried all of the Sony patches and they do not work. Panasonics web site says firmware must be from Dell...but Dell has no updates or is just plain stupid..so there it is..
Thanks for the help!
hmmm only one solution

I have to carry my "BD-RE UJ-210" to my friend who have Sony Vaio and run BIOS update...

Then put on XPS and DL new FW (*.bin) to file

I have the UJ-220 and cant play two of the five titles I have.

Cannot play Fox's AVP requiem, or Sony's 30 days of night. AVP will play the previews, but gives a black screen on the movie, and then Powerdvd 7/8 Ultra does not respond- just locks up. 30 days of night gives the black screen, and just locks up too.

I think its an encryption issue with bd+. I cant find firmware either.

I can play:
300
One missed call
I am legend

I own an XPS 1730, vista HP x64. I'm also having the same problem as mac_angel on the blu ray playback. I noticed you guys were talking about firm ware. Mine is still 1.00 i tried searching for 1.01 and could not find it on the Dell site, or from the firmware page. I found one however, but when i try to run it, it says the "target device is not connected" but it is.

Im running PowerDVD Ultra and whenever it trys to play back a blu ray disc it crashes saying "inconpatible graphics driver" my XPS has Nvidia 8800M GTX SLI however i could not find any drivers on the NVIDIA site, or on Dell for my x64 system. So i had to use the force ware on http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/. So i was wondering if there was any updates from the last post regarding blu ray play back. Thanks in advance.

It is not an issue with BD+, but an issue with BD-Java causing playback issues, and there is no firmware currently available to upgrade payer from profile 1.0 to 1.1, 2.0 etc.,. Resolution of the issues will eventually be resolved with software player fixes.

Here is the 8800M GTX x64 driver:
8800M GTX/9800M GT/Quadro FX 1600M

I have Iron Man and the Matrix movie series in blu-ray and both didn't work on my M1710 with the same blu-ray drive with PowerDVD 8. Also both these movies weren't playing also on my tower with a LG blu-ray / hddvd drive with PowerDVD 8 as well. I have updated the firmware with latest from LG, same result. Both system my OS is Vista Home Premium. I have install the new windows 7 beta, and have to reinstall PowerDVD8 and retest both movies and they work fine now. So my conclusion is that the problem is the OS Vista, who wasn't updated with the latest blu-ray specification or protection. I didn't upgrade my laptop with windows 7, so i can't confirm it will work now, but i have the same problem with both system and now my tower can play those movies, with the new OS.

--BUMP-- I just got my used and warranted UJ-220 for $130 which was a STEAL!!! I've got the same problem where I can play M2TS files directly from BVSS disks, but not BVDL disks. I can copy the M2TS files from a BVDL disk to my HDD and play them, but I can't play them from the disk. I am also using AnyDVD HD. If I don't use AnyDVD HD, I can't even play M2TS files from a BVSS disk. I've read that my video card (GO 7900GS) is not HDCP compatible. Could this be why I am having problems? I'm not going to go on eBay and get a 7950GTX just to test a theory. I do want to get an external enclosure, that way I can try the drive on my desktop which does have a 9800GTX hooked up to my TV which are both HDCP compatible. Also, would spending $100 for Blu-Ray enabled DVD software make all my problems go away? I just don't want to spend $100 on software to have it not work and then be unable to get my money back. And Thirdly, has anyone found a Firmware update yet that would work on a Dell?

Try using cyberlink PowerDVD its BluRay Enabled and is what I use to play back blu discs on my m1730 and vostro 1500 its $49.95 and theres even a free trial to see if it will work for you before you even buy it. Heres the link http://www.cyberlink.com/downloads/t...oad_en_US.html

Thanks!! I'll give it a try. I think all your laptop vid cards have HDCP though with the 8 series. The 7900GS does not.
Wicked nice XPS BTW. Does it have RAID?
