E1505: screen won't turn on after closing lid + no network

Hi all,

I have an E1505 Core 2 Ghz with 2 Gb RAM and ATI X1400. I have weird problem that I hope anyone can help:

I usually leave my laptop on for hours and closed the lid, hence the screen goes OFF. From my other room, I'll connect to the E1505 via Remote Desktop and can login / logout just fine. However, after about 30-60 minutes, the following happened:

1) When I open the screen, nothing happened (even though the laptop is still ON). Pressed the key, etc., nothing.
2) Tried to connect via Remote Desktop to do proper shutdown, but I can't even connect to the laptop anymore
3) Tried to do ping, and received timed out.

It seems that when I closed the lid, the E1505 goes haywire and the screen won't turn on and the network card stop working. I tried to experiment by leaving the laptop and NOT connecting via RDS and same thing happened.

Anyone know if this is a video driver issue? I tried Dell original driver and Omega driver and same thing.

sounds like its a problem with standby, when u close the lid of the computer it is going into standby mode which does disconnect ur internet.. but as far as the screen goes im not sure, do u still have all the crap on it from factory or did u do a fresh install? if u havent thats probably what u need to do..

I uninstalled all the Dell crap when I first got the laptop. I disabled standby when the lid is closed. I also disable automatic standby and hibernation in the "Power" settings.

My investigation so far seems to point that the machine behaves like the above when it overheat, because when it happens the machine is just hot as hell. Not sure why though, since I've left my VAIO S460P for weeks without heat issue at the same place where I put my E1505.

Can't remember where, but I read somewhere that if a laptop is being used with the lid closed, overheating can become a problem which causes issues just as you're experiencing. IIRC, the laptop was actually a Mac, and when this happened, just froze and the PRAM (I know that you're talking about a Dell) had to be reset before the machine could be used again.

I don't think your problem is a video driver and it seems that the obvious solution is to leave the lid of your 1505 open while its being used. Not sure what you can do to get your machine restarted (I assume you've tried holding the power button down) other than to let it cool off. Your battery drain assuming you haven't plugged the charger in; recharge, restart, leave open while running. Hopefully no damage has occurred. Good luck.

That's what I suspected and yes, when the laptop went into the state I described above, it gets very very hot. I did close the lid but I never thought that doing so will "enclose" the laptop such that no heat can escape from it, hence overheating.

Funny that this E1505 have this issue and there was nothing from Google. Imagine, if someone use this laptop at work, leave it on and close the lid and goes to lunch for 2 hours and comes back with the laptop won't turn on, that will cause an outrage! But then again, most people don't use the E1505 for work, I guess.

Called up Dell, and they said "don't leave the lid closed when you leave the laptop on". Oook..
