CPU User Replaceable?

Thread Starter
I know that this has probably been addressed already, but I must be an idiot at using the search tools in the forum because I get a lot of seemingly unrelated search results.

New 8887-C on its way...though my company is picking up the tab for this machine (Yeah!), they wouldn't spring for the extra cash to go to the 3.06GHz, so I'm getting the 2.4GHz.

After a year or so when the 3.06GHz processors are cheaper (and some of you speed demons start itching to upgrade your 8887-X machines with the latest 29.9GHz and want to sell your 3.06, is this a user replaceable item, or do I need to send it in to be done properly (proper heatsink application, etc)? Would that void the warranty if self-done?

If there's already a thread on this somewhere, could you point me to it?

Thanks to all for the GREAT info here.

I think the just of it is as follows.

You can replace it, but sager will not service your machine (unless you dont tell them about it :P)

From Adam's 8886 teardown, it looks pretty simple, just making sure that you apply some heatsink goo before reattaching the heatsink hardware?

Adam, can you verify that swapping the processor would be a warranty-voiding procedure?
