Area-5 1M5550 vs Asus G1S-A1

Thread Starter
Now what I mostly want to know is how realiable is Asus. I hadn't really heard of it till today when I was searching for gaming laptops on the net. I have heard of Alienware and its "customer support".

I'm going to start college in August and I need a gaming/work laptop and I was wonder if any of you knew which would be better in the end. Like which has better battery life and which one could I play games better on.

Thanx for reading!

The G1S is better in everypoint, exept speakers maybe. The G1S is a new generation (Santa Rosa platform). It's not even released officialy in north america yet. For $2,000 ,you will get almost the same computer except: The Area-51 will have a T5500 CPU while the Asus has a T7500. The graphic card on the alienware will be a 7600GT while the Asus has a 8600GT. The screen of the Asus is 1650*1050 rather than 1280x800 too. So go with the G1S-A1 or wait for the next-gen alienware.

Oh and the Asus has a 2 years warranty of the box rather than 1yr

Nvidia 7600 graphics card w/256MB VRAM
Nvidia 8600 graphics card w/256MB VRAM & DirectX 10 support
2 hour battery life
2.5-3 hour battery life

basically, the Alienware is a generation older, so it's somewhat of an unfair comparison. The G1S has a newer graphics card that allows it to get a significantly higher 3DMark06 score that the 5550 does (3600 vs 2000), has longer battery life (according to the reviews I looked at), and a more recent CPU with a higher front side bus. Also, similarly configured, the G1S is approximately $200 less expensive than the 5550.

As to reliability, the initial G1 was quite a popular model, so you can get a good sampling of user opinions about it by running a forum search. From what I've seen, although some people have had problems with them, the vast majority of G1 owners are very satisfied with their purchase and are happy with their computer.

If you put the T7700 and 200GB 7200RPM it will cost more than $200 more than the othero ne
