How can i connect my 5.1 speakers to my E1705 that has only 2 jacks. any suggestions?

This is the adapter for the laptop that provides Digital 5.1 out & component outputs as well. Be aware this only provides true 5.1 for movies. It does not support 5.1 for gaming, though you ca setup a virtual 5.1 enviroment with your reciever.

You can both adapter types here (compoenent & composite)-

is that the only solution? no way to be able to use 5.1 all the time?

What about for Music?

As I stated only movie playback allows for TRUE 5.1 surround. You can create simulated surround using your reciever.

The issue is that the sound card in the e1705 is stereo-only.

I picked this up a few months ago: http://www.sondigo.com/callisto I use it exclusively for connecting my notebook to my home theater receiver via optical out. Read more here: http://www.notebookforums.com/showth...light=Callisto

I have the same problem and was looking at USB dongles as well - there are quite a few apparently, mostly based on C-Media chipsets.

The real question is - is it possible to get all sounds from laptop through S/PDIF using solely onboard hardware? I was playing with hacked sigmatel drivers and i see the options there to convert sound into DD and output via S/PDIF (if i understand correctly), but apparetly the feature does not work - only the control panel is unlocked.

So is there a way to enable DD encoding + S/PDIF out on this chip/driver (i dont need anything else like stereo mix and/or input monitor) or the only way to do that is external card?

thanks,
comer

DD Live is not supported on the onboard chip. You can still get sound as-is (stereo goes as stereo etc.) through SPDIF, but to get DD Live encoding you currently need an external card. Which *is* stupid, as the DD encoding is done in software, so could theoretically be done in the Sigmatel driver as well.

Thanks m94mni! As-is is perfectly fine with me. Let it be stereo. I'll let my receiver to do the processing. The main goal is to get all sound out of laptop via S/PDIF.

I've got the adapter, so connection is not a problem, but the only time I get anything on digital out is when I play DVD or DivX with AC3 encoded sound.

So how do I do that?

thanks!

comer: there is a setting in the windows audio properties dialog (volume control -> advanced). Again, you will only get stereo output from games and music in this setup.

Nope That's what I have and the only sound I get is when it's DD/AC3. May be I am missing something and there's another setting somewhere...

there has to be, because I have no issues running SPDIF audio to my reciever during games.
