My E1705 to XPS M1710 Conversion

Hey everyone, pretty much my first posting here, looks like a cool community! I disliked some aspects of the E1705, and loved the XPS M1710 all around, but I did not want to spend the extra $ on it. So, after a little bit of ebaying, and some careful internal work, I present my humble mod.

The LEDs are powered through one of the rear USB ports, nothing special there.

I love that cover!!

Unfortunately, the front speaker casing comes so close to the actual speakers that even these tiny LEDs cannot fit between that gap, so I am unable to produce that nice uniform effect the XPS LEDs have, but I still like it!

Tell me what you think! Its by no means perfect but I think its pretty cool for my first laptop mod!

My specs are:
Dell Inspiron M1705
Core 2 Duo T5300 1.73GHz
2GB 533MHz RAM
7900GS 600/1600 1.24V
17" WUXGA Samsung screen
DVD-RW, Silly Creative software sound thing, etc.
120GB 5400RPM HDD, Samsung

Looks good. You sure get the M1710 palmrest so you don't have that nasty white trim. It'll also add the XPS lights to your touch pad. Click the link in my sig. I have pics of my i9300 that's now M1710 opened up with a professional look closed. I just hated that white trim.

That looks very cool! They are kinda hard to find though, I'll keep checking eBay unless you have a better place!

I think I bought mine straight from dell, although pain in the ass to call up and have them get you a certain part sometimes. They're a bunch of freaking morons.

that's what mine will look like once I receive my LCD cover...

I also have the palmrest, trackpad and hinge cover

I don't think i will bother with the LEDs though

Hey Guys I am about to change my e1705 to resemble the xps1710

Can you guys give me any tips

Can you remove the hinges from the lcd cover assembly?

In total how many plastic peices did your replace and how much did they cost?

if you want a complete aesthetic conversion it will require 4 plastic parts:

-palmrest
-hinge cover
-LCD cover
-LCD bezel (if you are doing the M90 or M170 conversion)

hey, sorry for not checking this thread much, but the leds are quite easy, just took a little duct tape and a ton of time trying various placements, it still didnt turn out too well but it is easy to do. just be careful when taking stuff apart.

did you use the LEDs that are embedded in the XPS lid, or did you put your own in?

Thanks!! My next project is to try to get those cover LEDs working by wiring the only color (blue) I want to a USB port or fan power adapter. Will post my results whenever I actually get to it :P
