8890: No sound card recognized

After trying to update Windows Media Player, my Sager 8890 won't recognize it's AC97 ICH5 sound card. Despite reinstalling the Intel chipset drivers and and AC97 drivers, it does not detect the sound card. There is no sound card listed in the Device Manager and there is no unidentified piece of hardware that requires drivers. Attempting to add a new device and searching for it comes up with nothing. This is a most mysterious problem but I sincerely hope y'all have some advice for how to find the problem, or better yet, the solution.

No one? I always knew that Sagers were unloved and very low quality computers, but this surprises me.
