Recommand a used Toshiba model with USB/v2?

I want to buy a used laptop. I've had wonderfully good luck with my Toshiba Tecra 510, and would like to stay with Toshiba. It shouldn't be so new my Win2K/SP4 will have a lot of trouble running on its hardware. I thought a TECRA 9100 looked pretty good, but then I found out it only had USB/v1.1.

Does anybody know when Toshiba started using USB/v2 in its laptops? Can you recommend a model?

Thanks

Jerry

The best thing to do, is go here to Toshiba.com and try different models to find out what info you would like to know. Once you have that, then you can go shopping

Thanks Digg, but that's how I found the Tecra 9100. I thought maybe somebody here knew about WHEN Toshiba started using USB v2.0, so I could narrow my search. Maybe not.

Toshiba does tend to "refresh" models throughout the year, but since they generally tend to release new products around february, look for models that were released as of early 2002. I think that's about when they switched the naming system from 4 digit numbers to a letter followed by a number. For example instead of Tecra 9100, or Satellite 5200, they went with Tecra A1, Satellite M10.

As for recomending a model, how much do you want to spend, what are your mobility needs (battery life & laptop weight), what types of applications do you plan on using it for?

Hi g00nter:

Thanks for the pointers -- I think they've put me in the right ballpark.

I've think I've targeted a TECRA M2, which has the USB v2.0. I'm always a little wary of "first-year models," so I'm going to skip "M1." I'm hoping an M2 will accept my Win2K/SP4 OK, as I really don't like XP. I see a a bunch of Win2K stuff listed on the Toshiba download page for this model, so I am encouraged.

Actually, other than the USB v2.0 support I would like to have for external hard drives, my Tecra 510 with Win95 runs all the programs I use, which include a bunch of DOS-based database stuff. I hardly ever run on battery, but I do carry my laptop back and forth to work every day.

Thanks again for the help.

The M2's a great laptop. I've got a M2v which is the same thing w/ an integrated graphics card (as opposed to the dedicated ones in the M2) and mine lacks the accupoint and S-video port. I really like it. It's light enough to carry around everywhere, solid enough to take a beating and the battery life of over 4 hours is also nice to have. My only gripe is that it only has 2 USB ports, but that's easily remidied with a USB hub or a docking station. It'll make things seem like they're flying, coming from that ol P1.

I don't recall ever having put 2k on this laptop, but I'm positive it should work. I'm pretty sure you could even use some of the XP drivers in 2k. At least I've used some 2k drivers in XP without any problems, and since thy both use the same basis it should be fine.
