Expansion D/Dock with PCI Video Card Problem on my Latitude D620!

I recently bought my Dell Latitude D620 (refurb) and a d/dock expansion station with the intention of replacing my desktop that uses two 19" ACER monitors. I am having problems getting the computer to work correctly with a PCI Video card, and have tried TWO different ones...

Nvidia GeForce Fx 5200 (256 MB): This card looked great because it has two VGA inputs (and my dad gave it to me for free). If I plug in the laptop while it's turned on, I am able to configure to use both external monitors (one into the back of the d/dock, the other into the PCI card). Whenever I plug the notebook in when it's closed and then turn it on, I get a serious looking blue screen, have to undock the laptop and run windows with "last setting that worked."

ATI Radeon 9250 PCI (256MB): The moment I dock the laptop with this card installed, the screen freezes and it is game over. Starting the computer up doesn't work either.

I am running Windows XP Pro.. I see most people have problems with Vista.


I want to be able to use the 620 with a video card to use my two 19" monitors, with the laptop closed. Does anyone have a solution????

Do either of the monitors have DVI input? If your monitors support DVI and VGA input you don't need a video card in the docking station you can use the DVI and VGA ports on the dock simultaneously. Unfortunately the DDock does not have a DVI-I port (which carries both analog and digital) so you can't use a DVI to VGA adapter.

The FX5200 would be your best bet since it has at least worked. You'll need to turn off Universal Connect in the BIOS (this might work a little better). You'll also need to set the option in BIOS to use the Dock Video card first. Connect both your monitors to the video card in the dock. That might fix your issue.

No both monitors are VGAs.

Working with the FX5200 i am still unable to get anything to happen when docking the computer that is shut down. I made both of the changes that you discussed for the BIOS, and have both monitors in the video card.

Is there anything else that makes it read the PCI video card first.. because when I try to turn it on with them both in the PC, the screens don't do anything at all.

Any and all advice would be appreciated.
