Quietest Hard Drive - Which one?

Hey folks,

I'm going to be upgrading the HD on my e1705. I was wondering what is the quietest 120-160gb HD I can buy that's reasonably priced? I was looking at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148214

What do you guys think?

TIA

OK, thanks for the input. If anyone else has another recommendation I'd like to hear it. But being that the Samsungs are also the cheapest drives in Newegg, I'll likely go with one of these.

You will still hear the fans which is the loudest IMO, so is there any point to buying one?

Achilles: The noise that I am mainly referring to is not the idle spinning noise but rather the noise the HD makes while reading and writing. I find it distracting and annoying when I can hear the ticking noise of the HD while it reads and writes.

I have a Hitachi 7200rpm 100gig HDD and it is the noisiest hard drive I ever heard. The ticking and clicking coming out of this thing is really hard to believe and this is a replacement drive sent by Dell which is only a few months old.I am real close to buying one of Samsungs new 250gig HDD`S. Actually I tell a lie my 200gig Maxtor external drive is the noisiest drive I ever heard, sounds like a coffee grinder when in use.

the 250GB could be loud as they use the newer PMR platters since no one has one to review theres really no way to tell. Ones things for sure the 200GB Sammy 7200RPM drive will be loud as any other 7200RPM drive.

Most newer notebook harddrives have an option in the BIOS for quieter operation, I believe the platters spin at the same rate but the movement of the heads is reduced so you'll have quieter (but slower) read/writes.

That can also be tweaked (while the machine is running) with Notebook Hardware Control.

Benchmarks show almost zero performance difference in quiet mode, but since I don't mind the seek sound (and can't really hear it over the fans anyhow), I leave it on loud.

My Hitachi is fairly noisy as well. Louder than my previous 60 GB 5400 RPM drive, which I believe was a Samsung. It doesn't bother me though because it's not super loud.

I would argue the benchmarks being the same in quiet vs loud mode via the acoustic management control.
I use MHDD one of the best software programs for managing hdd's at a very low level. I can directly control any hdd's AAM if its supported by drive (90% of drives out there)
I then run a seek performance test using MHDD and on most drives there is an increase of 3ms in random seek performance. Worse case I remember was increase of 7ms best case was 1-2ms (rare).

I've never heard my video card. What does it sound like? Does it have that high pitched squealing noise that the CPU makes occasionally?

I have so many things running on my desk, I can careless what it sounds like.

That's just me though.
