How to install windows on Satellite 5205-S705 if DVD-Rom is not working

Ok, so here is the deal. I am trying to help a friend with his laptop. It is a Satellite 5205-S705. Everything started because I couldn't get the Mini PCI Wi-fi Card working and I found out that it was because of an IRQ conflict with Windows XP SP2.

So I decided that it would just be easier to format the laptop and instal Windows XP SP1. That's when I found out that the DVD-Rom didn't work. So I went ahead and took the HD out and plugged it into another laptop. I formatted it, installed a fresh copy of Windows SP1 and everything was working fine, until I put it back into the Toshiba.

It goes directly to the screen that shows the Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking and all this options. I tried every single one, it just freezes after I choose one of them.

I bought and external DVD-Rom drive so I could reinstall Windows but this time inside the Toshiba, and oh surprise! I can't make the computer boot from the USB. I tried all the options posted in the forums, the ESC, F-12, selected every single one of the icons and all of them lead to the same screen with the Safe Mode options.

Any sugestions? Any kind of help would be really appreciated, I am really desperated!!!

BTW....all this experience has left a REALLY bad impression of Toshiba, I will NEVER buy a Toshiba and I will tell everybody that I know not to buy one

You can't do a generic install of WinXP on one type of PC and expect it work in another type of PC when neither PC shares any common hardware--this should be common knowledge to anyone who uses a PC.

Also note that you must use the supplied 5205 recovery DVD to restore the laptop back to its factory fresh state.

I'd recommend removing and reformatting the hard disk, don't install anything at all on it then reinstall it back in the laptop then power up the laptop with the 5205 recovery DVD in the external DVD-ROM drive.

I've personally been running my 5205 since 2003 with no issues whatsoever and have already had to personally deal with one dead hard disk and three dead DVD drives. Regardless I still wouldn't hesitate to buy another Toshiba.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I don't have the recovery DVD...is there any other solution?

I've dealing with every brand that no other has given me even as half the problems that this one did...maybe bad luck...don't know...but for sure I will never buy one for myself.
