Best Laptop $1000 can buy.

Thread Starter
I just graduated, and have asked for a laptop as my reward for making it this far. I'm trying to keep it within a $1000 dollar budget, as I don't need a power gaming system.

I've been reading the forums here for a while but decided to ask for some advice. For my 1k, I've been looking into a few things. I really want portability, and long battery life. The new Macbook looks great, C2D 2.0 GHz, 1gb ram, 80 gig harddrive, etc, right at the 1k mark. (but GMA 950 graphics)

While a similar dell model thats slightly bigger gives me similar specs with a radeon mobility 1400, while not having some of the features (or the battery life) as the macbook.

Things like these being so close together make it tough to decide, obviously, so does anyone have any suggestions? I'm open obviously to places besides dell/apple. Personal experience/knowledge much appreciated!

i would go with a macbook just because im in the market for one right now

I would avoid the Macbook until you get a good look at one, it lacks a PCMCIA or PC express card slot, And the case is made of this really cheap feeling plastic, and the hinges on the demo's they have out at Frys Squeal. I would take a good hard look at one at a store before I bought it, they are very unlike the Macbook Pro IMHO.

There is a decent Asus under the $1000 mark

A8JR-4P021C NoteBook Intel Core 2 Duo T5500(1.66GHz) 14" Wide XGA 1GB DDR2 667 120GB 5400rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 - Retail.

Even if your not a power gamer I would suggest Radeon X1400 or better or Geforce 7300 Go or better, It's going to be hard to get a nice well rounded laptop under $1000 you will encounter corners being cut, if you can stretch your budget to around $1200 you can get a lot more laptop.

If you really want to make your dollar stretch consider outlet notebooks which companies liek Apple, Dell, and Sony all offer. from what i can see you could make like a bandit on the dell site just make sure to get long warranty options for any thing you get (2 years or more)

dude, search eBay for a Dell Inspiron 9300, it's a great machine and will suit your needs 10 fold, I bought mine off of there for $850 shipped.

It's a 2.0 processor, geforce go 6800 vanilla, 2 gb of ram, bluetooth, dvd burner and a 17 inch WUXGA screen.

The 6800 card that comes with the i9300 is a reason alone to get that cmoputer it OUTCLASSES the macbook in graphics...

Go to Costco and take a look at what they got. You have 90 days return policy and 2 years up front warranty!

...but he won't be gaming, he said. I don't like the Intel Integrated stuff either, but it can get the job done if you're not gaming.

Look at the Dell 1420. I just confiured a nice one for 1150$. 14.1 WS, 8400GS, 9 cell battery. Its a bit heavy at 6 LBS with a 9 cell, but it got 3.5 hours on a dvd drain test. I bet with some undervolting and light work, 6 hours might be doable. but unit does not flex at all which is good.
