Um that does absolutely nothing its title would suggest.

It points out that older software, which in general was MUCH better optomized, runs better than newer software. No surprise there at all.

If it aint broke dont fix it. If that software still works for you, and the hardware runs fine, stick with it.

Now if they wanted to compare hardware, they could use a version of linux comparable to the Mac OS they used. And yes they most certainly exist, albiet at that point you are bordering on the embedded market.

But yea, that article dones't compare hardware like its title would suggest. It compares software written for different hardware, and in general how optomized it runs.

THe article points out exactly what it's supposed to...Bloat

agreed on the boat...but it pushes it out of proportion. a default xp runs about 600mb to install... vista takes about 2 or 3gb for the most part...not 15gb. then again yes...yes, small improvements aside, vista is nothing more than bloatware on steroids compared to XP/2k.

and seablade is right...wanna compare productivity.... compare mac os (which is designed purely for that system...optimization) to that AMD when its running a stage 1 amd64 gentoo configuration running ratpoison as the default desktop. ... not to lolz...vista

And yet the title would suggest nothing of the sort.

By the way ABF, even that is not truely comparing similar setups. Really at that point a nice LinuxBIOS setup with X running(WHich they have in a 1 MBit Chip now I believe).

lol I was just pointing it out as an interesting read.

Hehe, read some of the comments. Some of them make very interesting and valid points, despite the article being mistitled.

Just a few that caught my attention....

I especially liked the ones regarding the death of efficient program coding in today's era of quad-core chips. Even a few stupid widgets require an amazing amount of RAM just to run in the background.

Also, there is the issue of boot times. Maybe solid state hard disks will throw the old slow boot times out the window?

Also, keyboards and mice need to change. Period. They are simply not the best way for the human body to input information (just think about carpal tunnel). I think many would agree that drawing a circle with a pen-and-paper is much easier than drawing a circle with a mouse. Also, one can write a mathematical formula in a few seconds, whereas it would take a minute or 2 with MS Equation Editor.

Anyway, just regurgitating some of the gripes I saw and adding a few of my own thoughts

eventually I would expect us to enter an era of voice commands & visual tracking (sensors in the computer could track both eye & hand movements) You could setup different monitoring configurations...Say a racing config would setup a virtual steering wheel...etc

Hehe, man, I was only thinking as far as Minority Report, where Tom Cruise is using those finger sensors to "conduct" the images on the screen, but you got me beat!
