nVidia prepares 8800 for notebooks

WHILE THE ORIGINAL G80 chip was a monster and consumed over 100 watts of power, Nvidia decided to mark this summer with its NB8E chip, a re-spin of the original G80 that will address the enthusiast notebook segment.
In order to fit the power envelope, lots of changes have been made, from the way the chip is manufactured to the functional units themselves. Even though these cuts will decrease 3D performance when compared to the desktop, this will be a most powerful chip for notebook market. Currently in roadmaps we have seen somewhere between Croatia and Taiwan, NB8E should come to market as NB8E-GTX, NB8E-GT and NB8E-SE. These codenames will probably end as GeForce 8800M GTX, 8800M GT and 8800M GS. For the end, here's a teaser. For dual-PCB 7950GX2, Nvidia used G71M, mobile version of its ultra-successful G71 (7900) chip. Guess what becomes a possibility if the G80 is packed in 22W+? ยต

all g71m series. geforce go 7900 gtx and go 7950 gtx needs 45watts.well currently m9750 needs only for the gfx card 90 watts. since the new geforce go 8800gtx uses 22 watt. that makes 44 watt for two cards. that means longer battery life( longer then 1,5 hour). is it mean lower performance either????

ok one more time i got my own answerr.
geforce go 7800 gtx need 65 watt power consumption.(all the datas according to notebookcheck.com)

7800 - 65 watt
7900 - 45 watt
8800 - 22 watt

go nvidia go

22W? That seems very very low, here's hoping that it works out to really be as low as it's claimed to be. If it were 22W then there'd be no problem at all running that in SLI along with an efficient but not overblown cooling system.
22w does seem to be extremely low... It seems to defy physics, unless the 8800m cards have been totally redesigned...

If this is true, and the m9750 ends up with these cards, everyone that has already ordered a m9750 with the power gulping 7950's is going to be pissed... Oh well

Genryu, I love your signature - that is some deep crap, way deep...
I dunno, 22w seems way too good to be true. One possible way this could be accomplished as I talked about in another thread is by going to 65nm die shrink and w/ a redesigned architecture that is more energy efficient. That and considering the source that's given is the inquirer, I dunno to what degree you can take it to be fully true.

Yeah you're right about people who're getting the m9750's with 7950GTX's. I know I'd be pissed if that happened.

But yeah thanks for the compliment on my signature, I heard that saying once when reading some literature back in my humanities class.

NVidia is already shipping the G80 Mobile. It ships as the Geforce 8600m series. Apple released the new MacBook Pro's today with the Santa Rosa chipset. They ship with 8600m GT's that are Direct X 10 compliant.

I would hope that Alienware replaces the 7950GTX config in the m9750 with this config..it would explain why they sat on the fence for a bit waiting to ship the units. The 8600m is suppose to be faster then the the 7950 SLI config...

This is why I am waiting to pull the trigger. I am waiting to see if the config changes before they ship out the first units and then read a few reviews from those here.

the speed of 8600m is equal to 7600 go
I don't know where you got the idea that the 8600m is faster than a pair of 7950GTX's in sli, or even one alone for that matter. It's a mainstream card that is comparable to a 7600 variant at most, and it'll only be once the nvidia enthusiast DX10 gpu's come out that there will be any real competition for the 7950GTX.

muahahahah, I've heard that he 8600gt is comparable to the 7900gs.......that was not mobile cards though....IDK if desktop/mobile cards scale the same.

It very well could be comparable to a 7900 GS. That'd be pretty impressive if it is, but I still think it'll come in behind of course. I'm still waiting on the true enthusiast cards to come in to make a final call on it all. I would expect the 8700 GT (which might or might not be an actual product to come) to be more favorable of a comparison to the current 7900 series.

Incorrect. The card is 200% faster then a 7600. Guys, Nvidia only announced this card three weeks ago. Its really fast. Looks like the SLI system is still faster though. But this is more power efficient, and is DX10 compliant. 7950 is not. http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=404&type=expert

This is absolutely amazing. I am really glad I waited on ordering because it sounds like these cards are going to be fantastic. I hope that they are able to live up these early and very high expectations...

Wow all of a sudden i am getting buyers remorse on my 9750. How soon do you guys think it will be before theses cards make their way into the 9750? ( sorry if that was a noobish question ).
It will be awhile and I personally expect it to be after the first of the year. The only thing I have to base that opinion on is that the 9750s have not shipped and you know they are going try to sell out the inventory they have on their 7950s. I would buy a 9750 today with 1 7950 if I knew for a fact I could replace it later with a 8XXX card..
I agree, I would def buy a 9750 today if I know the cards could be swapped. The only reason I am hesitating is bc I want to see if they will offer the new high end nVidia GPUs in the 9750 when they come out.

Oh wow, I had not seen that article. That is a pretty healthy bump up in speed compared to the 7600. What I was more trying to refer to though is the fact that a 7950GTX is still a faster card (purely by the numbers) than a 8600 GT. I do agree it is more power efficient and it has the benefit for DX10 compliance over the 7950GTX, but people are still waiting for the enthusiast cards to roll out to surpass it in framerates and image quality improvements. At least I am anyway.
