Thank you (+ questions about D470v aka np4780)

Hello everyone

First time poster, long time reader. I recently purchased a D470v (Sager np4780) in Germany and like to thank pctorque for providing such an excellent forum and everyone in this forum for the huge amount of information, especially the reviewers who persuaded me to finally pull the trigger. I've been using the laptop for over a week now and I'm still impressed, but I have two issues though.

First of all, the integrated wireless 802.11b module is not receiving a very good signal, plus the signal shuts down completely from now and then. I have been using a sitecom router and usb receiving module without any problems before this, but the intergrated module doesn't seem to pick up the signal too well. I have read a thread on problems with the 802.11g module used in the 5680 which had similar issues and which were later fixed with a new driver Adam posted, but I couldn't find anything for the 4780.

Secondly I have installed some games to test the system. C&C generals and Halo seem to run fine, but Call of Duty; X2 the threat and Need for speed underground all ask me on startup to put the correct cd in the drive even if the correct cd is in the drive. Read that could be some driver issues, but I tried the official drivers provided on the cd, the 7.95 from sager and the omega's, all with the same problem. I also tried to disable autoplay, but nothing has worked.

I'll also post this in the technical section.
Everything else is great, no dead/stuck pixels , the screen is beautifull. Once again thank you, and sorry for such a long post.

For the gaming issue...try to download the newest patches...i have a 4760 and have played COD and NFS:U and didn't have those problems possible because I had the latest patches to them.

The wireless problem, could be some kind of interference...i heard things about cellphones causing certain problems so possibly look for these when your wireless fails again. Another thing to look into would be buying a PCMIA wireless card to see if it affects anything...if that solves it then it could be a bad internal wireless card which sager can reaplce by sending you a new one.

Hi all,

I have just bought a Notebook D470V and am having serious dramas with it. It will not boot up at all. I have tried everything that I can think of to fix it and have run it off of the DC power supply too. It seems that it is stuck in hibernation mode constantly, and I have only managed to get it up and running twice in the last month. Is there any tricks that you or your friends could pass on to fill this void that I seem to be stuck in?? Thanks a lot.

Do you have Daemon tools running on the system? With my 4780, I noticed that it would actually try to look for CD's in the virtual drive instead of the real one and if not found, would actually fail to find the correct CD. I ended up either disabling the virtual drive in the device manager, or creating an ISO of the disk I wanted and just mounting it in Daemon tools (which works out well for mobile gaming since you don't have to then load up the CD).
If you don't have Daemon tools running, this is something you could try. Load it up, create an ISO and load it in Daemon tools and see if it works correctly then.
My 4780 didn't have the internal wireless adapter, so I'm afraid I can't be of too much help there. My 4780 bit the dust about 3 months ago after having it and it working (almost) flawlessly for two years. I bought an additional 2 year warranty (thank god), and when it couldn't be repaired, Philips Magnavox refunded me for the full purchase price of the laptop. I was wanting to sell it after I got it back, so it worked out really well for me to get about 2 grand for a 2 year old laptop! This will enable me to upgrade to the 9750 or 5950.
The only other problem I had with the 4780 was installing Linux. Every time I installed ANY distribution, it wouldn't get past the hardware detection phase. After about 6 months of playing around, one day I switched the AGP apature from 128 to 64 and all my Linux problems were solved. Also, I noticed an increase in performance in all games in Win32. I don't know if it was specific to my machine, but it may be worth a shot to play around with that value.
