I'm going Ubuntu, please help me with partitions

Ok I have tried Ubuntu, love it.

I have all the software I need, I made up my mind.

The only thing stopping me is the partition thing.

Im currently using Windows XP MC and I don't quite understand how to make the partitions or the exact size I need for Windows and Linux both work properly and dual booted.

I'm also not sure if I need to restart Windows before installing Ubuntu, so I can partition windows.

I need someone with experience in this to give me some instructions please, I don't wanna use Windows anymore

First and foremost... DEFRAG YOUR HD BEFORE MESSING WITH PARTITIONS

Secondly, use the partition editor in the Ubuntu install to do it, it is just plain easier

I would say try to get at least 20 gigs for each OS. I believe there is still a default partitioning option in the Ubuntu installer, that might be a good place to start, though having a seperate /home partition is never a bad idea as then you can reformat the others but not lose your documents.

I installed it already

I have an issue with the volume, I can actually lower or raise the volume, but it sounds the same, doesn't matter if I mute the thing, it stills the same volume.

Could anyone help me with this?

Where are you raising or lowering the volume at specifically? In your playback program? The ALSA Mixer?

Also what sound card? Internal Speakers on a laptop? Headphone? External speakers? Coming out of line-out or headphone out?

Ishuaia,
You're prolly changing the volume for the wrong device. Right click on the volume panel applet and choose preferences. Make sure the proper audio device is selected. You also want to make sure in System Preferences that Ubuntu is defaulting to the proper audio device.

If you are using an external audio device like a soundblaster zs notebook then let me know and I'll give you further instructions.
