New Gaming PC, use 8500GT 256MB?

I just finished assembling a new gaming/multimedia PC (to functional level) that I hope lasts me through college. With the below hardware, would you say a GeForce 8500GT 256MB PCIe card would fit well into the mix or suggest something else? I'm looking to keep up and get something that has DX10 and of course Shader Model 4, with potential for an HD Optical drive within the next 4-5 years depending upon market.

RAIDMAXxA (ATX-568WBP)

GeForce6100SM-M (V1.0)

19" Widescreen LCD Analog/Digital Monitor 906BW

Corsair 2GB DDR2 667 Mhz (VS1GB667D2)

Logitech Media Keyboard Elite (967559-0403)

xRaider Mouse

Flexiglow FX Game Pad

Logitech X-230 (970123-0403)

3.125" Back Blue LED Case Fan, USB Tuner, Two 1/2 Terabyte Drives (one SATA one ATA), DVD Burner, Webcam, etc included as well if it helps. Using Windows XP Professional for sure as well.

Well, with 1GB of ram I can already guarantee that your system won't last you all the way through college because 2GB is now becoming the standard. An 8500GT is a low end card mind you, worse than the 7600GT in clocks and the only promoting factor is that it has DX10 (which may own that card in the end). What kind of budget are you working with?

Well sorry about the typo up there I do have 2 GB of RAM and I'm working off of a decent but still retail budget while saving for college and preparing for decent grants. I do believe what you say on the 2 GB and have done so with my new laptop from April as well. I thought at the least to go with a good card I should be looking at DX10 as a base feature. As to why I chose the Mobo CPU combo is because the Mobo came free with the processor which was also hella cheap.

Also, good part about the GPU is that you can get that card, and if it ever begins to degrade too much to work with, you can swap it for *Generally* a pretty good price instead of upgrading the whole system.

Even though I'm not quite going into college yet, I know what you mean about trying to budget everything in (especially since I'm a tech guy). So far I say you're build looks good, wait for another person to come by and review it though, just to give you a double check :]

I would say go with the 8600gt or 8600gts if ur gunna go low endish

What makes you suggest the 8600 over the 8500 as far as specs or reasoning? I mostly see the double DVI connection and the higher clock frequency to support this addition.

if this is a gaming pc why do you want to put a 8500 in it.......not much sense in that, get at least a 8600gts.
