MBP - LED vs Hi-Res Display???

Finally, they are here... And - as usual - the decision making process stumbles at another dilemma. For general purposes use - like working w/spreadsheet, watching movies/photos, web surfing - am I better off using 15" LED or 17" High resolution display?

Or could you show me the link to a pro/con article or LED displays in MBPs?

Thanks

your answers are going to be rather generic since the answers lie within the domain of LEDs vs. LCDs. the new MBPs are so new you really won't get a comparison for maybe a week or so. The LED screen should give you better viewing angles w/ less of a drop off in quality as you move from center. your color gamut will be better on an LED screen, so colors should be richer and brighter and hence of better use in multimedia production. the screen overall should be brighter than an LCD.

personally i'd go for the 15". if you want a higher res display for productivity spend the difference on a 24" flat panel w/ the same res as the 17" upgrade. your eyes will thank you and you could use 2 screens to work your mojo.

:cough: Both screens are LCDs.

The backlights are LED in the 15 inchers and they're CCFL in the 17 inchers.

Viewing angles really won't be affected by the difference in backlight but colour gamut, as Tria said, should be wider because of the more precise control of light afforded by LEDs. AFAIK the new LED backlights are rated at 300 nits just as the CCFL ones.

Most people won't be able to tell a difference between the two types of backlight and for general users there are only two things to consider: size and resolution. The 15 inch only has one resolution offer while the 17 has two. 1920x1200 is overkill for most people, IMO, especially if you're just surfing the web and doing word processing.

Your muscles and carrying space will thank you as well. 17" is just to large for a portable unit(I used to think otherwise for the record). I agree get an external screen if the larger resolution is that important to you.

I don't have a problem with my 17...it's a little clunky sometimes but for the most part it's really not that much bigger. I think my next one will be a 15, however, simply because the 15 has a higher res screen now than when I bought my PowerBook and because it comes perfectly config'd right out of the box.

Thank you, guys, for all your inputs.

I was at Tekserve store in NY, they claim to have new LED 15". Honestly, I could not tell the difference from the old one. Yes, it's a little bit brighter, but I did not see much upgrade in color palette. Funny, what I have noticed is how fuzzy Apple monitors are - I mean when you look at the text in a Word doc on those screens, the edges seem to bee fuzzy. Oh, well, I am still getting MBP.

I agree with Kakaze (u da man!!) - in terms of bulkiness 17" is not a killer over 15", and it is not going to heat up as 15". I guess I am going to go with Hi - Res option on 17"

Thank you, all.

Yeah ... I don't think the 17" is all that big. I would have gone that route if I didn't already have a 17". Plus, my MBP will be used mostly for couch surfing and travel, so 15" works a little better.

Heh, I remember when I told people I got a 17...I was actually laughed at for buying "lapzilla". Nevermind the fact that the Dell I was looking at at the time, the I8600, was almost the same size, despite being a 15.4 inch, and was twice as thick and heavier.

Hi-Res 17" is going to make your text pretty small. Did you see one in person?

I had a 1920 x 1200 rez Dell Precision ........graphics looked great and all but man.....you really had to get close to see fonts.
I'm content with my 1680 x 1050 rez. Nice thing I like about my 17" MBP is that I can plug in my Dell 30" lcd and I have 2560 x 1600 goodness.

might be an issue in the short term, but leopard will allow for resolution free scaling to accomodate this concern.

i don't see that in Word. but I know what you are referring to. it's the anti-aliasing for the type that can make it "fuzzy". i 've only really had an issue w/ it when on a CRT monitor w/ my iBook. the AA seems more appropriate for the LCD screens. in any case, you can try Tinkertool which will allow you to set the anti-aliasing to on or off and at what font size you want it to be active at.
