HP DV 6120us and external monitor connection?

My laptop screen is broken but i want to save some information from my laptp before i send it off to get fixed.
When i connect it to my external desktop monitor it shows as the laptop up then goes to blank. It is an hpdv6120us. What can i do to view the contents o y laptop?

You laptop most likely has a key combination (FN + __) to toggle the external monitor. Try that.

The reason why it doesn't show up when you just plug it in is because the laptop is still using it's own LCD as the default. You have to tell it yourself (either thru the key combo or in the settings) to display on the external monitor instead.
