Awsome, June 26th is going to be crazy! The day after The Darkness releases, Die Hard 4 comes out that day, and 3 days before the iPhone comes out!

These are nothing to be excited about...

Sure, they look pretty, but they certainly are a downgrade

Are you on crack? Besides the video card which is questionable at this point, EVERYTHING IS AN UPGRADE!!!! The gigabit, the webcam, the numpad, the HDMI port, the Santa Clara chipset, the memory, the processor, the dual hard drives, the raid, the wireless-N, the SSD memory, the extended battery life, the possibly LED LCD, the list goes on and on. I'll take a 1720 over an E1705 any day of the week. I can't wait to upgrade my Inspiron 9300.

No HDMI on the 1720 or 1721. That is, at least according to Dell's Initial Field Readiness materials. They're pretty spot on when it comes to paper specs, they're just lazy when it comes to taking photos sometimes.

Yeah when I was looking at it earlier today I thought I saw an HDMI in the pictures, but when I just went back and looked at the pictures I realized that I'm an idiot and what I thought was the HDMI port is actually the media card slot.

No, I am not on crack. Wireless N is already in use (although draft), I don't even want a numpad and many people don't along with me. A webcam only ups the price IMO, the gigabit doesn't affect me much being that I am fine with my current transfer speeds, the memory and processor fsb change doesn't matter to me because what I have now gets the job done without issues. The reason I upgrade is for the graphics. Without good graphics, getting a 17" is almost pointless.

i agree, i would otherwise use a 12" or 14" notebook, and that is why we are in the 17" section i believe . I Just hope the dont let the inspiron fall that far behind from the xps's system

I, nor Dell, care what you need . The point is you said the 1720 is a downgrade and you are incorrect. In reality, most of us dont NEED the latest and greatest but as enthusiasts we want it.

I hope so as well. I love the 17" Inspirons because they have basically been a low end XPS with a different style, and a severely lower price.

Theres always another enthusiast out there, my friend is a foot cream enthusiast, he would love if he could buy a laptop with a foot cream dish attached.

That and the foot cream dish comment made me laugh! I have one thing to say about this new line. If they're really gonna have that crappy 8600GT... that's gonna be laughable. Why would you jump on that from the 9300? In real life performance, a 9300 with an upgraded processor and 7800 GTX will be more than enough to blow the pants off the new line laptops (such as games and other 3D intensive applications). If I didn't care about that and I wanted all the other "awesome" upgrades, I'd get a 1520 series line because they have the same stuff, and are more portable. I got the 17" laptop to rip through the newest games at high resolutions... the 1720's (as far as "current" specs are concerned) will not do the job.

Civick EX hit the nail on the head! There is no point in getting 17" in this case since it offers nothing much better than the 15" series.

btw: Bibliography for the foot cream comment came from watching QVC because nothing was on TV

Last time I checked, 17" laptops are desktop replacement. Without best GPU possible, There is no point of point of getting one.

Is vostro the new xps notebook? If it is it is very ugly. They should take out the numeric keys and use a darker color like black on the touchpad, palmrest, keyboard, and the frame of the lcd screen.

Exactly. I originally got a laptop because I needed a computer that I could take back and forth with me to grad school, not every day but when I needed it. I still wanted to be able to play games. Have some portability. Also important to me was not needing to have a dedicated corner/room/desk to house my system. I simply didn't have the room to set up a desktop system. I started getting the 17" inspirons (original was the 8200, before 17" laptops) because they were much less expensive than the XPS line yet they still had high end performance. And with a little effort they could be upgraded to XPS specs (something that I have no doubt contributed to Dell making this change). I'm not the first to say, they've now made it so that the only thing you're gaining over the 15.4" Inspiron is 1.6" of viewable area and maybe space for another HDD (haven't looked if the 1520 supports multiple HDDs). Get an external HDD, more space for cheaper than the high end 2.5" HDDs, or you can buy a SATA Expresscard and add another HDD if you want the SATA interface that bad (though can't imagine why, without a decent GPU for gaming and rendering I find it difficult to imagine that there's any need for it). There are even Expresscards that support RAID configuration. Expresscard + HDD is cheaper than the $500 dollar difference that usually exists between the 15" and 17"ers. They have completely eliminated the usefulness of the 17" Inspiron as a DTR.

The picture in the link provided is of the new inspiron line, not vostro line.

Got to love the button

I think with that said it's fairly safe to say that if Dell does indeed go through and do this line of laptops without some compromise for the 17", we will witness the death of the affordable gaming notebook.

Edit: Although, it's almost like Dell is retarded. People are buying the 7900 GS so much that there's a backorder... and yet they choose a clearly crappier chip in the next gen? WTF kind of business sense is that?
