M675 won't power up

Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

My Gateway M675 won't boot for whatever reason. when I press the power button, the laptop will hum like it wants to boot but doesn't. Then the fan comes on, then nothing. I notice all of the lights turning on. The battery light is a wierd purple/pink color. I can't remember if it was supposed to be blue or not.

Anyways, I took it to a computer repair shop and they told me that they thought it was the motherboard. I've already shelled out $40 for a new power cord. Before I shell out $200+ for a motherboard, I was wondering if you had some other ideas?

Thanks

tried to start without battery plugged in? remove accessible parts (hard drive, ram module, wlan card etc ..) and then put them back in - reseating, as i call it. Apply some pressure on the keyboard and palm rest areas and press the power button? Smell funny anywhere when ac is on?

take them apart, clean up cpu/heatsink?

cheers ...

If the battery/power light is a pinkish color, it's indicating that the battery is charging, or that the battery charge is low. Try removing the battery and booting the computer. I have seen laptops with a shorted cell battery not have enough power to run because the battery acts as a severe drain on the power supply.

I have the same problem with my M675prr. Seems like alot of us out there have the same boot problem. I've heard of everything from bad power supply to resetting CMOS but nuthin' works. Now I'm looking for an honest to God tear it apart manual but coming up with nuthin' in that department. This has been going on for two years. Gave up and now am on the hunt again. Sigh. Hope dies hard.

Gateway's have multiple problems like this. Is the notebook in warranty? As others have said in here, the upper RAM slot will go out, or the CD drive can lock it up, the fan can stop things, but it will give you a message about that, is there video on the screen?. From your description of the hum.........is the fan spinning? The hum might just be a locked up Hard Drive(HDD). The only parts that would hum at you would be the fan or the Hard Drive. Try removing the HDD, try to power it on, and hit f2 immediately when the Gateway logo screen comes up, you'll go to BIOS settings, just hold the power button and power it off. If no hum, it's the HDD. Besides that, Mainboard. But the good news is that Gateway computers are improving, repairs on older ones, and the new releases. Acer acquired Gateway, and a new level of parts, mods, and technicians that work for Acer are taking over the design flaws of the computers that Gateway manufactured in earlier days. Gateways are nice to look at, and the engineers from back in the day had great ideas................................I own an M-6320, and I love it. I own an Acer Extensa 5630Z, and it's nice also.

Here are the details with my M675prr. I loved it and then one week after warranty ran out, the screen was blank. Everything sounded good, all lights lit up properly. I plugged in an external monitor and still nothing.

I've tried all the other stuff - new harddrive, removed and replaced memory, removed/recharged battery. I have to assume it's either a monitor chip/circuit, or the motherboard is bad.

This seems to happen so frequently with these models I just can't believe they all have bad mobo's. It's more likely something more discreet - a wire, structural problems, firmware. Problem is, I can't see anything to upgrade any drivers or bios.

I'd like to get in there and tinker and see if I can twiddle and test the connections, etc. I will NOT pay the going price for a new motherboard just to have it be something else. So that's why I'm looking for specs for this model to get in and have at it. I break it, oh well.

Please help

I'm stuck too. There are 2 wires (gray and black) that came from the monitor and run underneath the keyboard and through a hole in the motherboard. From there I have no clue where they connect. Where do they hook in to? PLEASE HELP. I cant find a service manual anywhere either.

Please help continued

if at all possible if anyone can help please email me at cmshaver29829@aol.com. Thanks in advance.

Those 2 wires are probably for the wireless card antenna connections.

Check the first sticky post in this section (a few gateway .....) there is a service manual for a m675 there

I'm not seeing a link for a sticky post. I'm new on this forum. Can you link me?

Update

Thanks guys for your help. I found the guide in this forum and it appears that those 2 wires are antenna wires for the mini PCI. This guide is wonderful...has detailed pics and everything. I wonder why this can't be found on the Gateway site. I'm sure that if it was, then their volume of support questions would decrease. Thanks again for the helpful links and info!
