Does Anyone Own an LG LM50-3 (aka IBMLG XNOTE)

I'm strongly considering ordering an LG LM50-3 from Australia and having it shipped to the US. From the one review I've found, as well as an older post on this board, it looks like it actually has a noteworthy screen

http://www.note-world.co.kr/productdetail.asp?pfid=l01XNOTE(LM50-3TA1)&iscatalog=1&isshow=1

specs are:
ntel® Pentium® M Processor 1.6GHz
Microsoft® Windows® XP Home
1MB 2nd Lvl Cache (On -Die)
512MB Memory
64MB ATI® Mobility Radeon 9600
15" LCD (SXGA 1400x1050)
60GB HD, DVD/CD-RW COMBO
Internal 56Kbps Modem + 10/100 LAN + Intel Pro/Wireless Mini LAN
Dimensions: W 331mm x H 274.0mm x D 26.4mm
Weight: 2.4Kg (Including 6cell standard battery)
price: roughly 2300 US from AUS and 2000 US from Korea

I believe its the same model as the xnote lm50 which is sold in korea and japan, but likely the AUS model has an all english keyboard etc.

Also, gigabyte is about to release a very similar model:
http://www.giga-byte.com/Notebook/Pr...ducts_N512.htm
not sure what the price will be, but it looks quite nice as well.

Assuming gigabyte releases the n512 in the states soon, I'd be inclined to choose that as I'm not sure how the warranty would work with an imported PC. If only notebook makers posted LCD specs. Gah i want a 14-15inch centrino under 2.5kg with a nice screen, and would be happy to pay 3k+ if i could get it. I realize theres always the t41p, but ive seen the screen and its not bad, but certainly not incredible.

Does anyone own the lm50 in any of its incaranations and if so, what do you think of it?

Thanks

Sean

Its funny you should mention this, i've been looking at this very same notebook, im located in australia, and the cheapest place i've found is www.thx.com.au which sell it for 2999 australian dollars which works out to be 2306 US dollars.

I was also wondering if anybody else had used this laptop as it has pretty much the same specs as the aopen 1557gls or zforce 2 but with a nicer case although i've yet to see detailed pictures.

However I can make an aopen 1557gls with better specs, eg 1.7, 1024meg ram from mushkin, 60g hdd 7200 and dvd rom for about 2800 australian, so its a comprimise of perhaps getting better build quality with the LG or going with a more "no frills" laptop like the openbook.

I know quite a few of the users on this forum have the 1557, but some people have had complaints about the poor build quality and plasticy feel of it. Not to say that it wont perform just as well in computer applications.

edit: just found some info online here.

AUS Prices

are Australian computer prices always higher then US or even SE asian prices? It seems so terribly unfair that the same notebook is roughly 2000 US in korea. I haven't been able to find any close up pictures of the AUS model's keyboard, nor how warranty would work if I imported one from either Korea or Aus, though I know Korean importers can getme one for 10% of the items cost...

As for build quality, I had the same concerns about the aopen model avaliable many places, as well as it weighing an additional lb. I wish we had some way of knowing the specs and or seeing pictures of the various notebooks screens. Perhaps we should look into creating a comprehseive notebook LCD thread...hmm I'll think on that

Unfortunately I don't own one but it is on sale here in Spain and it is very nice.

It feels very solid and the screen is very good.

Also it is very light, like T40p, and very thin.

Before it became available in Spain, I searched for some similar info and the Korean warranty is not international.

I've been eyeing the Xnote LM50 since I first read about it. I have friends in Korea, but I've reluctantly decided it's probably not worth the hassle to get ahold of one, not to mention the warranty/servicing nightmare.

Anyway, there's a guy on the x1000 forums who has (or had one) one. He seems to like it a lot.

Here's a ton of nice pics, if you haven't seen them already:

It's too bad this one will probably never make it to the US. The Taiwanese manufacturers are finally shipping a decent range of relatively thin Pentium-M/MR9600/9700 machines to choose from, but the Xnote would be one of my top choices if it was available here.

out of curiosity wouldn't it be easier to import from canada?

no kidding lol...ncix.com has them tomorrow, I didn't call them though, but that's their ETA.

Hmm, that's probably why I've been following the other thread (you might have noticed my multiple posts there).

When I first became interested in this model last year, it was only available in Korea. It's taken over 6 months to make it to North America. And I still don't understand why they're not offering the current LM-50a model (with 9700).

Now that's it's becoming more widely available the LG is a serious competitor to the Taiwanese Centrino/9600/9700 models. Hopefully, they'll release the LM-50a soon.

Cool. If anyone talks to them, ask if a 9700 will be available anytime soon.

I personally like the looks of the LM50 better than most of the Taiwanese machines (CL56, ECS G556, Asus M6N, Mitac 8050, Acer 800x etc), except for maybe the W1.

But now I'm really waiting to see the Sony S series.

called them up, they won't be carrying a 9700 model for anytime soon unfortunately.

edit: you have to understand how rare 9700s are in canada, the only computers sold locally which have them are the Acers.

did you by any chance ask when they're getting Lgs with 5400 or 7200rpm HDs?

no but i'll call now.
just wondering do you have a priority line with them?
they're a physical store about 30 minutes from where i live...yes...priority line...
alright the answer is hell no, they will not be making modifications to these because they are custom order anyways, and they will only carry the three models listed for the time being.

Wow, thanks for checking on that.

It almost seems like LG is clearing out their old 9600-equipped stock by selling it in other countries. I think they've been offering a 9700 model in Korea for a month or two.
well if you had a priority line i was going to ask if you would know when they're making the next big purchase of centrio 2 laptops heh :P
post #19 of 29
that sucks.. manufacturers don't seem to care avout HD speed.. hitachi needs a marketing campaign!

yeah well your average user shops by capacity, not drive rpm, never mind access speed, which is the most important
