New MBP Question

Thread Starter
Right now I'm running on a Dell XPS Generation 2, with 2ghz Pentium M and 1 GB of ram, with a 6800 Ultra video card.

If I were to get the 15" or 17" with the 256mb video card, what kind of upgrade would I be seeing in video? I was hardly able to run Halo 2 on this laptop, but would the Macbook be any better? I usually play games like WoW, Half-Life, and Halo.

P.S. I plan on installing Vista to play my games

Bob ... I don't think you will see a huge upgrade from the video card alone, but probably some help from the processor (in the games that can take advantage of it).

I've got the same XPS 2 with 2GB of RAM (yes, I collect notebooks) ... I actually found it to be a pretty good performer. Particularly for games like the ones you mentioned. Couldn't always play at full res, but I'm guessing the extra 1GB of RAM helped.

You may need some patience if you're planning on using Vista - there may still need to be some work done on drivers to optimize the Vista experience.

Not trying to discourage you from the MBP - just not sure it will be leaps and bounds better from what you have (it will be 1 inch thick, look better, weigh less, and have better battery life).

I'll be posting some comments in a week or so on my new MacBook Pro with Bootcamp/Vista - should get delivery early next week.

I know that I have so far been running Vista Business x32 with few to no problems. I don' use it nearly as much as I do OS X, but for what I have been using it for it has been running well. The only problem that I have run into so far was that at my friend's house I couldn't connect to teh internet over wireless. i could get local access, but no internet. OS X worked just fine though.

I have also found (and this was a gedankenexperiment made real on my part) that when running Vista in a virtual environment on 512 RAM and 1 core, both it and OS X are operable to a point. I would not recommend doing anymore than one or two things in either one, but it can be done.
