9300 130w power adaptor acting funky....

Hey guys -

I have an odd problem to run by you. For months and months, i have had a 9300 with the XPS mod, and an 130w that has also worked for just as long. But recently, more and more, the laptop has been telling me that it can't tell if the PSU is a 130w. I have verified that the pin is straight, and after a few tries, the system will work.

I am guessing that i will really need a new PSU, but i just want to check to see if people think it might be a more serious problem (mobo) first...

Thanks!

EDIT: One more thing - where is the seller here that used to sell all of the Dell accessories (especially the PSUs....)?

What sort of 130w is it? Is it a genuine dell? A lot of the non-dell 130w seem not to work with the 9300.

I'd suggest trying a new 130w, your current one might be on its way out.

As for sellers on the board, I think notebookforums kicked them all out. You can still find them in notebookreview and on ebay.

It could be that he had the wrong rev power adaptor. Of course I dont know why it would stop working all of a sudden though.

I guess you'll just have to get a new one

It is a genuine Dell, and has worked for months with no issue. If i leave it plugged in, it stays fine. Its just if i leave it out for a bit, do i have to mess with it a bit..

Hello,

My name is Mike, I’m a Technical Analyst located at Dell corporate headquarters in Round Rock, TX. I’m part of an internet outreach team developed to interact with the online community regarding technical questions and issues that customers face with Dell products. I read about your problem and wanted to offer some help.

It sounds like your AC adapter is starting to go out. As suggested in this thread you can usually find Dell adapters on ebay fairly cheap. You can also find them on our website or by calling 1-800-357-3355 and providing them with your service tag and the part you need. They will give you a quote and you can decide if you want to purchase through Dell or a 3rd party. The only thing that I would suggest is to make sure that the adapter you get has the same specifications that your current one does and that is has a Dell logo on it. I’ve seen a lot of damage caused to notebooks by generic ac adapters and batteries which is why we are very specific about our manufactures and safety features that we implement in our equipment. I’m sorry to hear about the problems, but I hope this information is helpful.

Thank you,

Mike

I had the same problem with mine. Ended up the cord that attached the brick to the wall was starting to come apart.

I'm having the same problem with my 130W power supply for my XPS. I've examined the power supply itself and it sort of poor design on one end and very good design on the other. The outlet wire that connects to the 3 prong connect on the brick is designed very good. There is almost no real way i can see that this side of the brick will fail as the connect is designed for wear and tear and its only connected to the board with wires attached to its terminals to allow connect wear and tear. I tested everything too so i believe there is not problems on that end. Its the solid connection that seems to be the problem. I believe there is a crack in the wire on the solid connection side. Sometimes is good enough for the bios to detect the power brick (probably looks for a specific info from that wire). Other times you'll site there and fight with the computer to get it to detect the power supply. This is a terrible design and i really wish they had the same detachable connector on this side. My friend is a Xerox/Konic/Canon repair technician and he said he's seen these kind of breaks on this set up numerous times. I think the only way to fix it is to redo the wire and possibly re-solder the connection to ensure there is no break or fracture of the wire. What really stupid is that the ac adapter is putting out the correct voltages as per the output specs on the brick its just seems Dell's added a safeguard that is completely flawed, because they want you to use their equipment $$ over a third party connector. I would like a Bios fix to remove this BS since the bios should be able to monitor the voltages needed from the power supply and shutdown if they fall into unsafe areas. Similar to the overheating safeguards. Thats just my $.02

Just because your power supply is supplying the required voltage doesn't mean it can take the load of the Laptop. You could have a 19.5V power supply that can only support 500mA of draw. The voltage is there to run your laptop but the draw capacity is not. VOLTAGE is not AMPERAGE. It's impossible for the Laptop to tell weather it has a 1W power supply hooked up or a 1000W power supply hooked up unless the power supply has an extra wire to send an identification signal. A device is going to attempt to draw as much power as it needs to operate weather the source can supply it or not. That's why your home has circuit breakers.

Also, last time I looked at eBay the Dell power supplies don't carry a price premium over the knock-offs.
