Macs and Microsoft Office, please help.

Thread Starter
I really want a mac, but it's been bothering me how I am supposed to open office documents (word, excel, powerpoint..). I know I can just purchase the MS Office program, but that's a $200+ program, way more than I can afford at this time. Are there any cheaper alternatives that let me use MS office programs or open files from those programs?

OpenOffice and NeoOffice should let you open all but the newest Office files—those made in Office 2007.

I would recommend NeoOffice. It is a native Cocoa app on OS X. That means that it is easier to install and will run better on your mac. I definitely understand your hesitance to buy Office, I was able to score a copy from my school... but if I hadn't I probably would have gone with NeoOffice.

NeoOffice in my honest opinion is leagues better than OpenOffice.

NeoOffice is your solution. dont even mess with that x11 crap

NeoOffice is a Java app, IIRC.

Also, they just released an OS X native build of OpenOffice but its still in Alpha.

Yea, it is a java/cocoa mix so that it fits in better with the rest of OS X.

I generally don't like Java apps on the mac since they take forever to load, and most of them don't quite match the rest of the system, particularly JGrasp.

u can get office for ~$100 in the academic version, if that's more doable for you.

i would use Neo. Hopefully the new mac office will be out eventually.

with compadibility aside, Mac office 2004 is hardly worth it.

Have you tried Thinkfree Office for Mac OS X. It opens and edits M$ Office files.

It's about $50 on Amazon. They say it has some limitations so be sure to test a demo if available before purchase.

I prefer NeoOffice, even though I have Office 2004...

MS office is PPC anyway so i would avoid that either way if you are looking at a new mac. my vote goes to Neo, i use it every day and works wonders. and if all you need to open is ms word docs, the textedit app that comes with OS X can open .doc files natively.. works pretty well too.

id use neo until the new office for intel macs is released.

i wouldnt waste over 100$ on office 2004 now, not a great investment IMO
