Going to buy a laptop for gaming, graphic design and internet soon but currently confused between these two choices that I've picked:

Asus C90S 15.4" >> $1,541

WSXGA+/GeForce 8600M GT 512M MXM
CPU:Intel Core 2 Duo Conroe E6600 2.4 GHz 1066FSB 4M with Arctic Silver 5
RAM: Kingston 2GB DDR-2 667 SODIMM (1X1G+1X2GB)
HD: Seagate Momentus 7200.2 160GB 7200rpm S-ATA 300
Battery - 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

Dell XPS M1710 >> $1888
256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS
17 inch UltraSharp TrueLife Wide-screen WUXGA with Black LCD Cover
Processor - Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7200 (2GHz/667MHz/ 4MB)
Memory - 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM 677MHZ, 2 DIMM
HD – 120GB 7200 RPM SATA
Optical Drive - DVDRW +/-
Battery - 80 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
Network - Integrated 10/100/1000 Network Card and Modem
Wireless - Intel Wireless 3945

Which would you choose and why?

I would go with the XPS. Its graphics card is better in raw performance but it doesn't support DX10 like the Asus one would. The key difference I see between the two is the processors. The Asus has a desktop processor crammed into it. That will produce more heat and noise than the one in the XPS, not to mention it will eat up the battery power faster. And on top of that the Asus already has a smaller battery.

Whether all that is worth the extra $340 is up to you.

Which you'd think be the faster one?

CPU-wise, the C90 is definitely faster. graphics-wise, they're currently about even, but if you get the C90, you'll be able to upgrade the graphics card as new ones are released.

Graphics wise the 7900GS outperforms the 8600GT. Add to that the 128 bit interface in the 8600 & you have a card that really under-performs & I fear will provide a low overclocking overhead, unlike the 7900GS which can be overclocked really well & with minimal effort.

The processor is going to be faster on the C90, of course it's a desktop processor. If you want additional processing performance on the 1710 you can go the route of the T7600 or T7600G, which clocks you up to 3.16GHz.

You can see the detailed M1710 review in my sig for further information.

Another concern is the small 6 cell battery with that c90.

The bottom line has to be-...Are you more interested in portability or gaming performance?

Gaming performance off course. But the C90S has the Power gear gaming mode that auto overclock to about 20-30% right. The offset with XPS for me is expensive upgrades. Plus lack of build in bluetooth, camera and possibly wireless connection.

SolApathy, the XPS doesn't seem to have a bluetooth integrated to it. Sorry for noob questions, but what need to be purchased to get the bluetooth functionality? And also, my 3,5G provider required that the laptop has PCMCIA card slot Type II, CARDBUS supported for the modem. What can I use/purchase here? Thanks in advance for the help.

Get the C90S, it will last much longer do to it being on the Santa Rosa platform and having a DX10 GPU the can be upgraded later on when you need to. Also as you can see it is already $300 cheaper than the xps, if you upgrade the xps to the 7600G CPU and put bluethooth in it thenyou looking at more like $500, may be more.

it's the Dell 355 Bluetooth module. It is installed in the bluetooth bay that is to the left of the battery compartment.
Who is your provider?

Kinjo- The bluetooth module can be purchased when yo buy the laptop. There is a bay for it. . I can't belive you said it's possibly missing wireless connectivity. I don't think there has been a mainstream laptop released in years w/o WiFi.

mitcity22, my first choice is the Asus C90S because of $$$ value and it's upgrade ability, but my patience wearing thin just waiting for it to be released. Asus Marketing Taiwan replied to my mail informing that it will be released End of June - Early July. Been waiting since mid May for this.

SolApathy, Indonesian 3,5G provider bro. http://www.indosatm2.com/index.php/s...broadband3g/en
There is no dell bluetooth module sold with that laptop I was offered, so I was wondering if there is any other options/module I can purchase here so I can enable bluetooth on it. I though wi-fi and bluetooth is a different device?

well I too was looking at the C90s but from researching it seems as though it wont be able to suppose the high end dx 10 cards as they are larger and produce alot of heat. So right now i am stuck Waiting for dell, Toshiba and the others to produce a Dx 10 soloution for gaming.
the c90 doesnt have santa rosa. But, buy the C90S anyway. Its much better I think. Faster processor, dx10 gpu UPGRADEABLE, up to 3GB ram. Its a very nice machine, and its less money. Id get AS5 on theat cpu and gpu though, it might run a little hot. Im exepting a few reviews between today and tomorrow.
It does not have a faster CPU than the fastest available for the 1710. The GPU, while DX10 compliant is hindered by it's lackluster performance. while in benchmarks it is almost on par with the 7900GS, in gaming the performance gap is widened considerably.

and then you just swap it out for the 8800 GT when it comes out and then the c90 schools everything!

The 8800M series most likely won't be under type III MXM, so I wouldn't count on it.
the c90 has type II XMX, and its been confirmed that the 8800 is compatible.
InsaneBinky can you prove this i would be interested to see your souce of this information and its reliability tested because i am contemplating buying this system and this would be my deciding facotr thanks.

InsaneBinky i would like to know the source of this information as this is deciding factor because i love the system but not sure about the 8800 compatibility the reliability of this information is important
